re-entering pitcher question

Ok, a stupid mom's question. Game today, our pitcher comes in in the 5th inning. Pitches 2 innings. We change pitchers in the 7th, the pitcher goes back to CF, new pitcher comes in. The new pitch has a hard time getting the 3rd out so our coach brings back the previous pitcher that was still in CF. Umps tell coach he can't re-enter the pitcher so we stayed with the other pitcher. Coach is protesting the game because he thought you could re-enter the pitcher since he wasn't removed from the game.

Who's right?

the only pitcher that can go back in is the starting pichter if he has not been removed from the game.Or he has not been removed because of trips to the mound.

I am assuming HS rules. If so, then this is legal. As long as the visitation rules haven't been exceeded and the sub didn't take more then eight pitches to warm up then he can go back.

What Mike said with the limitation that a player removed as pitcher can return to pitch only once per inning.

Thank you gentlemen. As it turns out, the field ump called the coach later that night and said they were wrong and the pitcher/CF could have re-entered. Luckily we did win the game but that last out was hard to get.

MST - I'm pretty lost on the whole 8 pitches warm up issue. Could you explain the significance of this rule?

To keep dishonest home team coaches from having their pitchers warmup for 2 hours when they lead 10-0 in the top of the second?

The eight pitch warm-up is a standard across the rule sets. It doesn't mean a pitcher can't take more if it deemed necessary by the umpire but if he does then the other pitcher can't return.

It's because the only reason you allow more than 8 throws is if the pitcher is being removed for an injury. If he claims he's injured to allow his replacement more than 8 throws, he can't return as pitcher.

The sad part is that too many HS coaches do not develop enough arms---there is no reason to bring a kid back in to pitch after he has left the mound and begun to "chill down"

Perhaps if they changed the pitcher re-entry rule coaches might develop more arms

Believe it or not in a tournament a few weeks ago, I had an umpire tell me he owed me one because he called a third strike pitch a ball. He said he missed the call. I told him not to worry, it all works out in the end. It was a first for me.
