My son had a great Summer, made the best travel team in the area as a PO, this team is loaded with D1 commits. He made his way into the rotation, made 2 starts in Georgia at the WWBA, the team made it to the final 16. Gunned at 88-89 and touched 90 during the Summer at PG, V-tool and at an event in Oklahoma.

Gets camp invites, go to one that he is interested in, they do a simulated game, he strikes out the first 2 hitters, walks 1then strikes out the 3rd. Emails the RC the next day to ask about velo and he says we got you at 77-79 thanks for attending the camp. He was 80 when he was 14. WTF. He seems really deflated. Can you lose that much in 2 weeks?

Your son would know if he was 10 mph slower.  What did he say?

I don't think you can lose that much but you can lose it.  Mine pitched in Atlanta and all over and was always 87-88 this summer.  Topped 92 in school.  Went to Arizona PG event at the end of the summer and pitched when it was 111 at 2 in the afternoon.  Mound was soft from the rain night before and topped 83.  I asked him if he felt any different and he said he thought he threw as hard as he normally threw.  Just as successful as always.  I don't know if he was off that much or gun was off.   He threw the next week back here and was 88 again.

It is unusual to lose 10-12 mph in 2 weeks.  I might have to find someone with a gun to check him just in case.  If it is true, then you might need to have him checked.  Loss of speed is usually an  indicator that something is wrong physically and just has not appeared.

We went to a camp and it was similar last fall. My son  threw 88 at one camp on Saturday and they said 82 at the other school on Sunday.  He hadn’t topped at 82 in years.  There were players running the guns, and talking.  They didn’t have an IF throw for him but I had video of him doing  it.  They either had the wrong number for him or just messed up.  I had him send his verified stats and video the next day and the coach called our coach within 2 hours. We hadn’t emailed the head coach prior and they basically know who they are looking at when you show up.  If you didn’t dialogue first, they probably weren’t paying attention.

That sounds about right, the first camp where the kids didn’t have assigned numbers. I know this is how the assistant coaches get extra money and it was really poorly ran. Very disappointing.

Sounds like they confused him with someone else and if the RC isn't picking up on it, then he probably was not truly interested in your player.   Saw it happen on numerous occasions when son was going through process, either to him or guys he knew.  It happens.  Probably a blessing in disguise, and an omen.  A bad one.  Move along and scratch them off your son's list.

Ha! I just saw where you are located. Bet it was the same school (I know they had a camp last weekend). Camp was ran very poorly when we attended.  When they gave my son his stat sheet, he said, that can’t be right, and the player that handed it to him said, a lot of the guns need new batteries🙄.

When their coach called our coach, he had no idea my son had even been there the day before. I would send your PG profile and video to the head and rc if he is interested in that school.

I admit I'm no pitching expert since son is a position player.  I recall a few years ago that on HBO's Real Sports they addressed the variance in measured pitching speed. The easiest answer is the calibration of the gun, but there are other factors.  Humidity, mound condition, slope and position of the gun (depth behind home plate, angle, where the radar is hitting the pitched ball.)  Logically it sounds plausible to have a few mph variance, not so sure about 10 mph.

Were you there?  My son was 87-88 in HS.....I had watched him pitch so much I could tell if he was more than a couple MPH below that almost any time.  Same now that he's in college.  I've gotten pretty good.  I can usually watch just about any pitcher and be within 2mph of what the gun is reading just by using my eyes.   I would think your son would know if he was 5+ mph slow.....and for sure would know if he was 10+.  If he is interested in the school, I would contact the RC again and ask him if he had seen him throw or was just using the numbers he saw on the sheet.  If he didn't see him, ask if you can send him video and PG info.

This is pretty interesting and I would seriously consider looking into this. It's very possible that the stats were marked down with the wrong player. Who knows, maybe there was a kid throwing 77 who just got an offer out of this.

Your team made it to the round of 16 in GA, I'm sure your coach/organization has some contacts and pull in the college baseball world. Have him call and see what they say, especially if this is a school he is very interested in. As for now I would have son respond to email and say he was clocked at 90 in GA and maybe a link to PG profile. I think your son would know if he was 10mph slower. He would 100% know if he was 10 mph faster. No response tells you all you need to know about this program anyway

This. Just going to move on, going to a few more camps, have senior year ahead. Lesson Learned. If they were interested they would have made the effort.

Sorry, it this response concerns me.  If your son is a 2019, then the clock is ticking.  Don't sit around assuming schools will make the effort.  You may need to be very proactive the next 2 months.

Even if not interested in the school, I would clarify as other suggested.  You'd be doing right by your son, open the coaches eyes or maybe he would refer your son to another school.  I wouldn't just move on...

I will agree with above.  I would definitely at least send pg page link so that they can look it up.  As has been said on here numerous times, the coaching world is a small world and you don't want that coach talking to others about your son.  I would at least ask them to verify that it was the right kid and send the link.  Even if you are not interested.  Maybe, as has been said, they will re-look at it or pass his name on.  Don't see how you can lose that much speed and not know it.  If my son was that slow, I would definitely be wanting to know from him what was wrong because I would see it in his pitching.

Good HC's and RC's know what the kid is throwing.... they really do not need the gun.  Same thing happened to 2018 at the Area Code underclass.  His agent at the time said he was looking at a scouts gun in the stands and it read 84.... agent was all upset.... I said no way he was 84....  Son and I went down to talk to Nat's CC and asked him what he thought,  he said we had him 90+ and the try out and he struck out 5 of 6 out here today... get a new agent.... and we did.  one time will not make you or break you.  I agree tell the college they were wrong in a nice way and move on.  don't worry about this .... spend your time working towards the next outing.
