As a favor to a friend who is an assigner, I filled in at a 14U DH today. I haven't worked youthball in a long, long time.

I was more than amused at some of the comments I heard from coaches.

"If he (F1) moves his front foot first he HAS to pitch."

"He can't run right if he overruns first."

"What do you mean he wasn't out of the baseline? He was the grass for God's sake!!"

"He's left handed, he can't fake to third!"

"Look, Blue, I'm not going to argue balls and strikes, but...."

"You can't call that a strike, the catcher dropped it."

(After a balk was called on a "pick-off" attempt in which the F1 threw to F3 who was playing in, at least twelve feet in front of and to the side of the bag) "What do you mean he didn't throw to the bag, the first baseman caught it didn't he?"

"The ball's dead on a walk, Blue, have you ever read the rule book?"

Incredible.

Maybe some coaches should spend more time learning and teaching kids the real rules and less time teaching them how to lie their way to first base.

Worked HS level fall game......most of the players were youth leagues heading up to HS baseball for the first time.....skill level was around JV...

The team was being coached by the JV coach and helped by a couple of youth ball dads.....

First game went well with one daddy coach starting to spout those same pearls of wisdom, but generally we ignored him.....

Runner on first, he calls out "what ever you do take out that second baseman and break up the double play"

JV coach calls time........yells over "hey bob, you arent doing us any favors with that daddy ball BS, so knock it off........thats illegal in HS..."

there are some guys out there that get it....

I got tossed on this one once back in my younger days when I was dumber.

Runner on second, ball bounces, hitter jumps but gets hit, runner on second advanced to third and umpire held the batter at the plate. I asked what was going on and he said the ball hit the ground so it's not a HBP. I asked him what it was and he said it was a dead ball. I said it was a dead ball because it hit the batter and not for hitting the ground. He said I had it wrong so I asked him if it was a dead ball why did the runner get to keep third and why isn't all balls in the dirt dead balls. That's when I had to follow his finger to the parking lot.

Two things even more sad is that I wasn't yelling and screaming. He and I were talking like two people on the street would if they were trying to keep conversation private.

Second thing is that virtually everyone I talked to after the game thought I was wrong and that if the ball hits the ground then batter doesn't get base.

One of the things I teach umpire candidiates in my umpire classes is to try not to compound an umpire error with an ejection.....
