Really, really dumb play – anything against the rules about this

Man in 1st and 2nd, batter swings at pitch in the dirt on a 1-1 count, ball skips past catcher, both runners advance.

Man who advances from 1st is told by 2nd baseman it is a foul ball….you guessed it, he returns to 1st.

Do you just chalk this one up as a bone head play or is this an infraction.

PS: The kid that did this is normally a very bright kid who just wasn’t all there tonight
To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.

Manny did much the same thing but was tagged just before he got back to 1b Smile

Manny didn't need anyone to tell him it was a foul ball, he "thunk it out" all by himself Wink
"just being Manny"

a good rule of thumb:

"tune in" the umps & YOUR base coaches for game input

"tune out" the opposition

This depends on which rule code the game was being played under.

In NFHS rules this is considered verbal obstruction and is treated the same as physical obstruction.

The official interpretation 234 from NFHS says when a defensive player lies and tells a runner that a passed ball was a foul ball, the fielder is guilty of verbal interference.

In NCAA or OBR based leagues, this is legal as players are supposed to be aware of the situation or only take direction from thier own coaches or an umpire.

sometimes NFHS thinks too much, as this basicly could NOT happen on a passed ball ...

but COULD on a pick or block of a ball (WP) in the dirt where ya'd have the swing, the puff of dust w/sound of ball in dirt & then add the sound/action of the block/pick

the PU has his hands full in calling that one right & you're asked to also judge if a player 130 ft away can be caught in a fib Roll Eyes

so how do you determine if the defender is lieing or honestly mistaken Confused
or
if indeed it was a foul ball?
input from the swing, the batter's reaction & catcher's reaction?

your vision is effectivly blocked by the catcher ...
the sound of the ball fouled off the plastic bat end plug is much like the ball hitting the plate or shin guard

hmmm, isn't the BU about 90 ft away & moving into position for the anticipated
throw-down/play on the runner stealing?
he'd have less than a 50/50 chance of getting it right Frown

Big Grin

agree, that's likely why NFHS rules are seldom used outside of hs Wink

you think the BU cannot tell when there's been a passed ball with runners on?

the BU is the only umpire who is going to *hear* the VO anyway. How can the PU hear that when he's watching the catcher run down the passed ball and fans are screaming around the backstop?

No Bee....with a runners on base the BU would already have been in position B or C which is about 15 feet away from second base.........he would be in perfect position to rule on VO.
