Water pump is leaking - know of a good mechanic? "April Fools"!!

Seriously, let me just give you the situation and then explain how your association does it. R1 @ 1ST, grounder to F5. He's hurrying to implement DP. Bobbles ball. Throws to first to get BR. R1 breaks for 3RD. Dead Duck. Plate Ump has rotated to be by 3RD. I always (as a Base Ump) take THE SECOND PLAY in the infield. He says "since I rotated" - it is his. Good thing is was a done deal as we had two umps calling "out". Not one person said a word as the runner was clearly out. But in the back of mind of an coach paying close attention, he might think that is a little unprofessional.

First of all, you need to do a thorough pre-game.

Your partner should have announced (to you) he was rotating to 3rd and again when he got there. There can't be any doubt as to who has what.

Determining responsibilities by the "2nd play in the infield" will only lead to confusion. Either it is a rotation or it is not.

Your play is a new rotation for 2011 (CCA 2-man mechanics). If R1 is safe at 2nd and continues to 3rd, PU rotates to take that play (and the any play at the plate if there is an overthrow and R1 keeps on truckin).

I'm not a big fan of this rotation. Now, I must head left of the mound (unless a fair/foul is required on the 1B line). Heading up the right side (no rotation) gives me a better look at the slide at 2nd as well as a pulled foot/swipe tag at 1st.

And what's worse - the base ump having to bust it back to get an angle on the play at 3rd or a potential foot race to the plate between PU and R1?

I agree with Dash, I don't like the new rotation. What the manual doesn't address is what happens on the overtrow at first. It says the BU is now responsible for the DB call, but what happens when it doesn't go out and now there is a play at second or third.
Overthrow at first, BU rolls to the line to watch for DB, runner goes to second. F3 throws to third, ball gets away, runner goes home, footrace between PU and runner. Second runner goes to third on the throw home, footrace to third for the BU.
Horrible mechanic change to fix a problem that didn't exist.
For us, this is not a new mechanic. This has been the pro mechanic...PU rotates with R1 or R1/R3 even on hits to the infield.

But, as Dash says communication is essential..."I've got third if he comes" followed by "I've got third, I've go third" if he does come.

I was happy to see CCA adopt it so we can be consistent.
