1st time poster, I'm going to be a senior in high school this year. I'm a 6'1 LHP, I weigh 180 pounds and sit around 80, I'm posting because I'm wondering where a guy like me stands in the recruiting process. I played JV last season for my high school team and did very well. Could I still get recruited if I played JV as a junior?

I'll try to help.  The issue you have is that you're quite a bit behind in the recruiting process.  I would say that a 6'1 LHP throwing 80 as a HS junior could probably find a spot...but you'll have to start NOW!!!!   I would say your best bet right now would be D3, NAIA or Juco....only because of the velocity.  There are quite a few fall camps going on....depending on where you live.  You're going to want to get in front of coaches now.  Waiting til next spring will really put you behind and significantly reduce your chances of finding a spot.  Put a video together if you can...and send it to some coaches....and see if that brings any response.  Also, don't be afraid to email them....explain your situation and hope for the best.

Good luck!!

You're a bit late in the process.

First off - college coaches typically don't scout HS games.  It's very rare for them to do so and if they do it's because there is someone worth coming out to look.  That means somewhere along the line that player was noticed by someone who made a few phone calls.  My son's HS teammate was one.  As a 17 year old he was throwing 93-94 mph.  College coaches and pro scouts did come to the HS games, but only to look at him and only when he was scheduled to pitch.  He was drafted out of HS and signed with the Rays a few years back (2012) - he's been pitching in the MiLB ever since - up to 98 mph and touched 100 a few times.  No D1 or D2 offers since his gpa did not meet NCAA minimums.

What you need to do, is get to a showcase such as PG (Perfect Game) to get your skills assessed and a rating.  To be honest though, most D1 coaches are probably done or near done recruiting and getting commitments for 2016 graduates.  They'll be sending out NLI's in November.

With your velocity, you're best bet to play college ball, is probably a D3, NAIA or JuCo.  Maybe a D2.

Like others have said, you need to get to work immediately.

Put together a short video of you pitching. Try to borrow a radar gun so that you can show your velocity in the video. Include titles with your name and basic information, but nothing fancy. Search for examples on youtube. You'll want to send personalized email with the video link to coaches at the schools that you are interested in, and that are realistic academically and on the baseball side.

You'll increase your odds of finding a spot if you play this fall. That way, you can invite coaches to see you pitch in a game. Don't be afraid to call a coach directly. This process could go on until next spring for you. Many D2/D3 and JuCo recruit right up until the end of the school year. Are you doing everything possible to increase your velocity? Are you doing any pitcher specific training? If not, that would help your velocity.

There are many D2 and D3 baseball programs within an hour or two of your home. Start by making a list, and ruling each school in or out based on academics, size, cost, level of baseball, etc. These links will help you identify the schools.
