My son just had Tommy John surgery last week by Dr. Andrews in Birmingham. He is a HS Junior and is very determined to come back strong. Up until now he was doing very well as a RHP and has got some serious interest from D1 and D2 schools. My question is: should he contact the schools that are interested and let them know about the injury or wait until they contact him this July to tell them about the injury. Thanks for the help...the surgery went well and now it is up to him to do the rehab.

I agree with TR on this. Having him make the calls now does several things. One, it shows the schools that your son is honest and upfront and willing to discuss a difficult subject. Two, it shows them that he still has interest in their programs. Three, I don't think there is any downside to a young man calling about this, as a coach is likely to see it as a sign of character, which I guess is sorta repeating my first point.
A real feelgood story on the topic: we had a kid a few years back who had it all go crazy arm injury wise in the summer before heading off to college

Well he had the surgery bit and is now a junior at the D-1 level--just threw two 6 inning stints totaling 12 scoreless innings---named Northeast players of the week by College BaseballInsider---ifyou do what you have to do it can all return

Way to go !!!!
