How would your son like to get "phone calls and texts" from a head coach going into a College World Series Game? Would that influence his decision to go to campus?

"There's no doubt playing for the national title helped us get some of these freshmen on campus," he said. "I was calling them and texting them all the time on the bus to our games in Omaha. I made sure I touched base with them.

Georgia expects freshmen to contribute

It shouldn't! I know this is difficult but I think players and parents need to understand there are TWO "camps" and two perspectives involved in the recruiting process --- the player and the coach may have different goals. Just because a coach actively recruits a player does not necessarily make it the best fit for the player. I have known, read about, and heard horror stories of recruits that signed with top college programs to realize the "fit" was terrible and their dream developed into a nightmare. Trust me this has happened at Georgia too. By Perno publicly stating that he expects freshmen to contribute should be regarded as pure recruiting lip service. He will probably say the same thing next year, and the year after, and the year after. He, like every other coach, plays the best nine. He does those things that he thinks are in the best interest of his team and getting the most from his recruiting efforts is paramount. He needs to say the "right" things! Lets say he develops a history of starting freshmen over proven upperclassmen. That might make the freshman year exciting for the incoming freshmen but could prove disastrous during that player's sophomore and junior years.

D1: Text messages are OK once they have signed a NLI or other commitment if a NLI isn't applicable. D2 (13.4.5.1) is similar and effective 8/1/08.

13.4.1.2.1 Exception—Electronic Transmissions After National Letter of Intent Signing or Other Written Commitment. After the calendar day on which a prospective student-athlete signs a National Letter of Intent, there shall be no limit on the forms of electronically transmitted correspondence sent to the prospective student-athlete or his or her parents or legal guardians by the institution with which the prospective student-athlete has signed. For an institution not using the National Letter of Intent in a particular sport, or for a prospective student-athlete who is not eligible to sign a National Letter of Intent (e.g., four-year college transfer), there shall be no limit on the forms of electronically transmitted correspondence sent to a prospective student-athlete or his or her parents or legal guardians by that institution after the calendar day on which the prospective student-athlete signs the institution’s written offer of admission and/or financial aid. (Adopted: 1/14/08)

I disagree that a WH visit and honors is a recruiting influence. Baseball is a "different" type game. We all know that Fresno could field the identical team in 2009 and not even make the tournament.

Winning your conference more often than not is a recruiting influence. One team each year rides talent and luck to the CWS title but 30 get a ring. After that, it is a crapshoot.

Those are some awesome pictures. What an awesome experience for those boys. The thing for me that made Fresno States win so special 1. they didnt even have 35 guys on their roster all year from the one I have looked at,2 they were playing with injured players, theyre not the WOW school that all the kids want to go to, they were a bunch of s****** guys that had a good tourney. Hey if it helps them recruit so be it.
Perno wasn't texting new recruits but most likely his signees which he was allowed to do.
While not a Perno fan, do you think he is the only one who does this? Roll EyesI have seen and heard son's former recruiting coach call his signees after a game, and pretty sure he was doing it in Omaha as well.
Remember, once one signs, it's the recruiters job to make sure he makes it to campus.
After son signed (and many other I know that went to Clemson) phone calls continue all year right up until they come to school. He'd get phone calls after college games as well as his own to see how he was doing. While I realize why they were doing it, I want my son to go play for a coach where the phone calls DON'T stop after he signs, I don't care if it's a team that played in Omaha or didn't even make their conference tourney.
If you all don't think that a trip to Omaha, or the WH (way too cool I agree), winning conference tourney's, high rankings, best recruiting class, many drafted players in a program doesn't influence recruits, you guys don't understand college baseball is a business and a big one at that. Thes coaches work real hard at emphasizing that.

How many times have your son said, I want to go play on a team that has a chance to go to Omaha or win their conference title? Now just imagine that he might have that opportunity AND get drafted out of HS, the coach is going to play it up bigtime to get him on campus.

Many freshman players who are top HS prospects make contributions, but they have to earn it just like everyone else. My son passed on draft opportunity and ranked high as HS prospect and ranked high his freshman year in college, I didn't think they would not let him contribute, no promises were made, but it was pretty obvious he would have a significant role as a freshman.
