I have a question on being granted a red shirt year. My son is currently a junior at a NCAA school playing baseball. His freshman year he was at an NAIA school. It was during his freshman year just after completing the 9th game into the season that he told his Coach that he was possibly going to transfer the following year after that season was over to a NCAA school that had previously recruited him out of high school. We (family) relized this was a big mistake. Two days later, my son was released from the team. The coach told my son that he was not committed to his program, so he was nolonger needed. The team played a total of 48 games for that season and my son competed in 6 of those games. Also when that season was over that same Coach offered my son more schlorship money to stay. The Coach said lets forget about everything and move forward. My son said "no Thanks" and he eventually transfered. His current Coach is going to petition the NCAA this year to hopefully get that year back. Any Coach petition for one of his players with a similar situation. If so what do you think his chances are ? Thanks!

The NCAA has no relationship with the NAIA and I doubt that they really care--but it is an interessting ppoint-- does time at a Non NCAA school count against the four years of eligibility-- time at a JUCO does and I would think they see a year at a NAIA school as the same

Having fought with the NCAA as a parent myself I wish you the best of luck
Straight from my son's hand-outs they just received yesterday. He said they went over all of these questions.

Just got his schedule, looks like a great season of baseball ahead.

Here's the info

Eligibility

The rule states that participation in "any" college or university level athletic event (except scrimmages) above a high school level during the season of sport shall be recorded as one (1) season's competition in that sport.

By participating for a second, play or point in any scheduled athletic competition at any college or univieristy, other than a scrimmage you have used one year of athletic eligibility.

Medica Redshirt

The injury must be a season ending injury and be specifically defined and validated by a licensed physician.

The incapacity must have occurred before the student has participated in 20% of the scheduled games, meets or matches.

The incapacity must have occurred in the first half of the season and resulted in the inability of the student-athlete to participate for the remainder of the season.

The other concern about redshirt we ran up against was the number of units towards a degree. My son was considering redshirting his 2nd year at a JC due to an injury and then playing for the JC his 3rd year. However, he would have had an extremely difficult time completing the number of transferable units to be eligible at the 4yr. The rules about progression topwards the degree have changed alot
