Regarding velo that is often discussed here, Joe Kelly, 29, drafted by the Cardinals, was considered a soft tosser when he first was drafted. Soft being better at off speed, breaking balls and closer and more accurate often 90 more often than over 90.

Yesterday he drilled Holt with a 97.7 fastball.  The philosophy is sometimes pitchers are often more mature physically as they get older and refine their pitches and mechanics.

So for those worried about velocity, sometimes it's just part of the process, most good coaches and scouts recognize projection, many don't.

I am not a die hard fan of either team, but I love the rivalry and often root for the Yankees in the series.

But I got to say, you go Joe!

Well it wasn't Holt that got drilled, it was Tyler Austin. Still Holt was the recipient of a dubious slide into 2B on a force play where at least one angle showed him raising and moving his leg towards Holt's calf.  Tonight's game will be interesting, but I'm sure both teams will receive warnings before the game... As they say, this isn't over as I fully expect the Yankees will look for their pound of flesh on a HBP just as much as the Sox will look to take the opportunity to slide hard into 2B.

Red Sox fan here ... Joe Kelly is an extremely mediocre pitcher on his best day. My friends and I call him Gas Can Kelly. As a reliever he's gas on the fire. Now the Red Sox have another bullpen ace, Carson “Hazmat” Smith.

Kelly is typically between 97-99. But he lacks control, command and his pitches are straight as an arrow. I swear the guy can’t throw a first pitch strike. It took two attempts to hit Austin. In an era where hitters are striking out like crazy Kelly and his upper 90’s fastball doesn't have a 1:1 K:IP ratio. His velocity keeps getting him MLB opportunities. I prefer he reside in Pawtucket or another MLB city.

What Tyler Austin must not have known is Kelly is considered the best athlete on the Red Sox (more athletic than Betts).  When Austin mouthed off Kelly motioned him to come to the mound. Before the scrum started Kelly landed two punches in Austin’s mouth and split his lip.

My reference to Kelly is about his increased velo,  not necessarily his control at this point. He is an excellent clubhouse guy.

I didnt mean Holt got drilled as my brain was fried this morning! But agreed when you slide in with cleats up the next guy is gonna get the payback. It is how the game polices itself and I love it!

So happy there is another discussion on the board than the same day in and day out!  JMO on that!

Much to do about nothing.   We've seen this repeated a thousand times.  If Austin is stupid enough to come in spikes high there is going to be payback....and payback came in the form of a 97 mpg fastball in the back in 30 degree weather.   I'm guessing that didn't feel good at all.

Looking forward to tonight's game.  The rivalry is back....it just needed a little push.

I don't believe the rivslries exist for players the way they exist for fans. For fans it’s a lifetime of city versus city. For players most don’t play for the same teams for more than three to five years. For players any team they're battling to advance is a potential rivalry.

Kelly does have a reputation of being a good teammate. I would just like him to be a good teammate some place else.

Great comment on Boone’s comment ...

As for Boone, allow me to borrow a tweet from WBZ-TV sports producer Joe Giza: "To summarize Aaron Boone's reaction: Tyler Austin just got done saving a bunch of puppies from a burning building then Joe Kelly hit him for no reason."

To be fair Kelly said ...

“It's a pitch that got away on a cold night.”

Everyone acts so innocent after brawls. He must have slipped on a bar of soap.

From round one ...

“He spiked my leg,’’ said Holt. “He cut it pretty good. I probably said something I shouldn’t have said, but it was a bad slide and he knows it was a bad slide.’’

“As soon as I saw [Aaron] Judge and [Giancarlo] Stanton coming, I started backing up,’’ admitted Holt. “I grabbed (flyweight) Ronald Torreyes.’’
