Redshirt rules

Is there a set number of innings a player can play during the season and still be declared a redshirt for that season. I was told that if you played in less than 12 games during the season you could be redshirted at the end of the season and save the year.

JMBat, I think the number of games is 10 or less to red shirt the following year.
