Looking for advice to help our son.  Son was recruited by D2 as LHP, in the initial meeting son asked about their thoughts in red shirting..coach said they only had one kid ever red shirt and he didn't even know why they did it. No NLI signed no scholarship, fast forward to now, son has only pitched one inning, so of course kicks himself for believing the coach, son doesn't understand the whole redshirt process so asked the coach if he could coach said no and walked away.  Let me also mention since the fall this is only the third time the coach has spoke to our son, so needless to say he was a nervous wreck and didn't ask any other questions.  He is trying his best to stay positive but is only given mound time at practice every few weeks, of course he is taking it upon himself to practice quietly so he doesn't get in trouble.  Needless to say he believes it time to move on.  Question, he is paranoid about putting himself in the portal, is also considering JUCO, if he transfers to a JUCO does that use his one time transfer rule, if it does and he goes the JUCO route and then graduates from the JUCO is that considered another transfer?  Thanks for any advice.

I'm sorry this has happened, but slow down and take time to understand these concepts.

Redshirt means that a player didn't pitch a single inning or have an at bat all season, and thus the season doesn't count against his eligibility.  So, the coach did not lie; he gave your son one inning, meaning that he has used a season of eligibility and cannot redshirt.  The time to have asked about redshirting would have been before that inning.

Players were always allowed to transfer from a 4-year to a JUCO and then back to a 4-year without sitting out.  That hasn't changed with covid.  What changed is that now players can transfer one time from a 4-year to another 4-year without sitting out.

This thread from last year is about D1, but seems similar to your son's case, and had lots of good advice:

Good luck.

Contact Rick Allen, he checks in every so often. otherwise go to his website https://informedathlete.com/

2 years ago we created an enhanced version of the transfer portal to include Position and class

Note, as a LHP, he should have an added advantage.  How does his metrics compare with others

Last year we created a 2020-21 version, but didn't publish as for we had other priorities.

As we reconciled the 2022 transfers , we might be able to cross reference to the transfer portal

Currently, we reconciled NCAA-D1 and D2 transfer in,

Working on NAIA,

tbd  NCAA-D3 and JUCO

Note, look at the rosters of your local JUCOs, to see what is in their pipeline
