I have a couple of semi-related questions and I am looking for feedback from more knowledgeable folks here. My son is currently a freshman (preferred walk-on) OF at an west coast DII. He came into the program with a PG Grade of 8.5 and he has shown well this fall (he tells me that the coaches like his skills and effort). The HC has made it clear to all of the freshman that he typically redshirts most freshman, and by looking at the roster information, the stats from the last two seasons bear that out: (approx 75% of freshman RS). My son and I are not too concerned about the redshirt situation (it is not a question of making the team or facing any cuts) as many teammates have gone through this and a fair bit of them have prospered in their upperclass seasons.  But something I read on this Board from a few years correlated college summer league roster placement with redshirting and eligibility. The HC has helped place my son on an east coast college league team for this next summer and (1) I am trying to be assured this is a good indication of his value to his college team; and (2) I am wondering if there are truly any particular eligibility wrinkles to redshirts playing summer college league?

More knowledgeable folks will hopefully respond, but my thoughts are that if your son is getting placed on a summer team now, that is a fairly good sign.  There are many players that aren't placed until April and May.  In my limited experience, I also know of a player that was redshirted as a freshman and played summer ball (D1).

Regarding the second part of the question: playing in a collegiate summer league has no effect on the number of college seasons you can play at an NCAA school.

My son and several other players I've known played summer ball before and after the school year they sat out as redshirts. Not an issue.

Summer leagues will generally allow players as long as they still have college eligibility.

So if your son spends five years at his college and redshirts his freshman year, he could play four summers and four collegiate seasons. No problem.
