yesterday a juco coach told the incoming freshman that all but 4 would probably be redshirted this year. the 4 would probably be pitchers.
I did not know that redshirting was a common practice at jucos. evidently this happened the last 2 years at this juco. one of the 2nd year players that had been redshirted spilled the beans before the meeting.

I can't see spending 3 years at a juco unless baseball is all you want to do with your life.

I guess we should have done better homework on the school.

goodseats - sorry to hear of your situation, I hope it all works out well.

So, what does that look like on the roster, are you a Freshman 2 years and a sophomore one year or are they listed as a Freshman one year and a sophomore 2 years? I looked at several JUCO rosters and I don't see any with RS notations.
you are right. they talked to a few that were redshirted two years ago and they are taking bogus classes. looking into the transfer, want to see how the fall goes, then make decision in November. they, the freshman are getting to play in fall games.

Good seats,

Transfer at semester! Find a place that you can play, get your release and leave.

You go to a JUCO to play. I mean, you'll run out of courses to take if you stay there for 3 years.

Just my two cents.
will do once I get all the final info on this. i put this out there so all parents may know to ask many questions as they talk to coaches.
we just thought this was place that was the fit. Hind sight probably should gone with one of the other offers.

I can't help but ask...Which JUCO program are you talking about? We are a year away from playing college ball and need to know which programs to avoid. PM me. Thanks!
If the rosters only show "FR" and "SO" then the "RS" or "RFR" is invisible to those looking at the rosters so you would not realize you need to ask this question. I have seen other rosters that use "RS" so you know the player was redshirted. I have even seen "RSJR" for someone that was redshirted their junior year due to injury.

agreed. however, this teams best player last spring was redshirted until an injury allowed him the opportunity to play.
went back and looked at the stats from last spring and only 6 freshman played. 4 of these in 7 games or less. this is some of the research that we should have done originally. just thought what was being said was all there was. to trusting.

He will play no matter what.

You can trust that.

I have always questioned the advice often given here.
Go to a JC or small D1 and you will play right away. Some of these have 40+++ show up for tryouts.

I believe most of the "Advice" I've seen on here says going to a smaller D1 or JUCO gives the player a "Better Opportunity" to play not a guarantee. We looked at many JUCO's but what always turned me off was the number of players they bring in to compete for a few positions.

I believe it is harder to get playing time at a bigger D1 school because you are sometimes competing against kids that are as old as 23 maybe older.

AS KG stated... if he is a player they will find a spot.
GS, I cannnot speak to whether its a good idea to RSF or not, I have no idea where you are going to college. However, I do know you want to make absolutely sure your academic path allows for a transfer at the end, whether its 2 years or 3 years. There may be a requirement to attain an associates degree, not just 60 hrs of credit. Make sure you are 100% right or you'll mess up your eligibility!

Good luck! GED10DaD
thanks for the guidance. the goal is about getting a good education. so if my son is one that is redshirted, he won't be there 3 years.

hey thanks for the tip. it seems this may happen more than I thought.
just going to go play best he can in the fall and see where the chips land next spring.

goodseats - if you go to the green "Find" tab above and search "redshirt Juco" and select all forums (not just Texas) you will find some threads discussing redshirting at a JUCO and will get some good information.

Hopefully you will also get some good feedback in this thread as well. Best of luck.

Sounds tough.

Heck, I had another JUCO recruit me from the third base coaching box during a spring game.

It's simple folks.

You talk to the head coach and let him know you don't want to red shirt.

If he thinks your a player, he doesn't red shirt you and plays you.

If not, he will gladly give you a release.

It's easy.

At the JUCO my son attended, anyone who was redshirted their freshman year (other than for a medical reason) was not invited back at the end of the season. I would suggest you follow Ken's advice for finding another school and get out at mid-term. The real problem is that in order to transfer after three years at a JUCO, you have to transfer in to the four year school with something like 60% of your hours towards your degree. Good luck finding upper level classes in year three at a JUCO. It can be done, but your son's options for choosing a major can be EXTREMELY limited.
