Kirk, I've been told that Laredo has just one good pitcher. Three of their 4 playoff series this year have been one-game playoffs and they have won the last two series (both one-gamers) by one run.

In February, Reagan beat Laredo United in the Border Olympics 18-3; however, this was the 6th game of the tourney and Laredo United was out of arms by then. Obviously, we were not facing their top pitchers.

Laredo United's record is 30-6, with one loss in district.

Just found this on the Austin American Statesman's website:

Chaps lose coin flip, prep for one-game series
By Thomas Jones | Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 02:43 PM

A flip of the coin might make for a few less miles of travel for the Westlake baseball team, but it will heighten the intensity of the regional semifinal round.

Much to the chagrin of Westlake coach Jim Darilek, Laredo United coach J.J. Gomez won a coin flip and elected to play a one-game Class 5A Region IV semifinal playoff contest 7:30 p.m. Friday at the San Antonio Independent School District Sports Complex. The lucky flip continued a trend for Gomez; the Longhorns (29-6) have played two one-game contests in the playoffs, including a 5-4 extra-inning win over Mission Sharyland last week.

According to Darilek, one-game series are a rarity in Class 5A baseball. The longtime Westlake coach said only about 20 percent of 5A coaches favor one game. The Chaps (23-15) haven’t played a one-game series since an 11-4 win over San Antonio Churchill in the 1998 regional quarterfinals.

United will likely start senior right-hander Jorge Guarneros (7-1), who has won each of the other one-game playoff series. Guarneros scattered six hits in eight innings against Sharyland last week.
Collikar, my heart rate was basically through the roof in the first 6 innings! I am very proud of our boys, who pounded out 17 hits and had no errors. Laredo did not pitch its ace, and I'm sure we will be challenged in Game 2. Laredo United will not go down without a fight.

Our sophomore stud left fielder Jordan Mengele went 4-5 and junior 2nd baseman Vinny Postert hit a 2-run homer -- his 8th or 9th of the season. Every player in the lineup had at least one hit.

Whataburger Field in Corpus is absolutely beautiful. Very light winds and a comfortable temp -- great night for baseball!

I am heartbroken as I write this.

Game 2 - Laredo United pitched their ace and he did not disappoint. Reagan's batters struggled to get hits off of him, but after 6 innings, Reagan was ahead 4-2. Our pitcher up to that point was Carter Hahn. In the 7th inning, our coach had our ace close. Trouble is, he had pitched a complete game the night before and his arm was spent. Laredo came back to score 3 runs in the 7th and won 5-4.

Game 3 - Laredo pitched their #3 pitcher and he did a good job limiting our offense. After 6 innings, we were tied at 4. Unbelievably, our ace came in to close once again -- his third time to pitch in 3 games. A Laredo player hit a blooper to the outfield and an error allowed Laredo to score. Once again, Laredo won 5-4.

During Game 3, I was having to drive back to San Antonio to help my daughter get packed for a school trip that begins early tomorrow morning. As I drove, I stayed in touch with folks by cell phone and got many updates on the game. My son had 3 RBI's and scored a run during Game 3, but would have gladly traded any personal success for a team victory. He was completely distraught afterwards. My husband said it was incredibly moving to see our coach console him and the other players after everything was done. I am so sad that I was not there to give son a huge hug and see his last high school baseball game ever. My only consolation is that his baseball career is not finished.

I am so proud of the Reagan Rattlers and all they accomplished this season -- a 37-5 record, a #2 ranking in the state, and a #5 ranking in the nation. What an incredible season. So sad it had to end....

Thanks to all for the kind, encouraging words. They definitely are soothing to the soul.

I think depression has begun to set in. While the loss is sad, I'm especially melancholy about the fact that Ben will never play high school baseball again. All of the fun, drama, and excitement -- there will never be anything quite like it in the future. (Is it too late to adopt a 15-year-old boy who is gifted in sports? I'd truly love to do it all over again! Wink)

I am incredibly thankful that Ben was able to be part of Reagan's program the past two years. All of the families are loving and supportive, giving each other hugs before and after games and high-fiving other parents when their children make great plays or get hits. Ben, who played with many of his Reagan teammates for years at McAllister Park Little League and with the South Texas Sliders, strengthened his bonds with them not only at practices and games, but also at team breakfasts throughout the season and team dinners before each playoff series. Just last night, a baseball family hosted an evening party/slumber party for the entire 30+ member team, including all who were brought up from freshman and JV teams as the playoffs began. Throughout the season, there also have been numerous occasions for parents to get together, including parties and "strategy sessions" at restaurants before games. The friendships that have been formed and strengthened between players and parents will last a lifetime.

I'm sure that many senior parents are feeling the same types of emotions. Stinks, doesn't it??? Frown I think that the cherished memories stemming from our sons' participation and accomplishments in high school baseball will become even more important to us in the coming months and years.

I am very excited about Ben becoming a part of DBU's program. We could not ask for a better group of coaches to guide and instruct our son. I'm sure my husband, daughter, and I will visit Ben in Dallas every chance we get! I am hoping to meet some of my beloved HSBBW friends, many of whom live in DFW, in person in the next few years.

Best wishes to all the seniors as they graduate and embark on grand new adventures!
