Thanks to all for the kind, encouraging words. They definitely are soothing to the soul.
I think depression has begun to set in. While the loss is sad, I'm especially melancholy about the fact that Ben will never play high school baseball again. All of the fun, drama, and excitement -- there will never be anything quite like it in the future. (Is it too late to adopt a 15-year-old boy who is gifted in sports? I'd truly love to do it all over again!
)
I am incredibly thankful that Ben was able to be part of Reagan's program the past two years. All of the families are loving and supportive, giving each other hugs before and after games and high-fiving other parents when their children make great plays or get hits. Ben, who played with many of his Reagan teammates for years at McAllister Park Little League and with the South Texas Sliders, strengthened his bonds with them not only at practices and games, but also at team breakfasts throughout the season and team dinners before each playoff series. Just last night, a baseball family hosted an evening party/slumber party for the entire 30+ member team, including all who were brought up from freshman and JV teams as the playoffs began. Throughout the season, there also have been numerous occasions for parents to get together, including parties and "strategy sessions" at restaurants before games. The friendships that have been formed and strengthened between players and parents will last a lifetime.
I'm sure that many senior parents are feeling the same types of emotions. Stinks, doesn't it???
I think that the cherished memories stemming from our sons' participation and accomplishments in high school baseball will become even more important to us in the coming months and years.
I am very excited about Ben becoming a part of DBU's program. We could not ask for a better group of coaches to guide and instruct our son. I'm sure my husband, daughter, and I will visit Ben in Dallas every chance we get! I am hoping to meet some of my beloved HSBBW friends, many of whom live in DFW, in person in the next few years.
Best wishes to all the seniors as they graduate and embark on grand new adventures!
