MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- University of Southern Indiana junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) was named the NCAA Division II first team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Mastroianni is the only the second Screaming Eagle baseball player to be named first team and the eighth baseball player overall to be named All-American.
The only other USI player to ever be named first team All-American was Kevin Brown, a catcher, in 1993.
Mastroianni has had an outstanding season for the Eagles, leading the team with a .404 batting average in 63 contests. He also set new USI single season records with 91 base hits and 58 stolen bases. The North Central Regional Most Outstanding Player also tied the USI single-game record with four stolen base three times this season.
The .404 batting average is the highest by a USI player since the GLVC began using wood bats in 1999.
The GLVC Player of the Year and the NCAA II North Central Region Player of the Year also is the nation's best in stolen bases per game (0.9) and ranks first in the GLVC in15 offensive and defensive statistical categories.
The 13th-ranked Eagles and Mastroianni are 41-22 in 2007 and continue play in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Monday at 2:30 p.m. against 5th-ranked Franklin Pierce College (49-10) in an elimination game. The game features a pair of teams that play in wood bat conferences (GLVC and Northeast 10).
Mastroianni leads the Eagles during the NCAA II Tournament with a .526 batting average (10-19) with five runs scored, two triples, and six stolen bases. He was one-for-four with an RBI in USI's 11-2 loss to 4th-ranked Columbus State University to begin championship play.
