Texan, I didn't know anything about the field until you commented. For those who haven't been to Robstown, here's a link to some photos:

Here's a rundown on the two teams. I haven't been able to find out a lot about McAllen, but here's what I know:

Reagan
Record: 34-2
Ace pitcher: Senior Casey Selsor, 12-0 record, 1.81 ERA, 110 K's in 81 innings
No. 2 and 3 pitchers: Junior Carter Hahn - 8-0 record, 2.27 ERA; senior Drew Martineau - 7-1 record, 2.80 ERA

McAllen
Record: 25-12
Top pitchers: James Franz and Marshall Miller (I'm told that both throw in the upper 80's)

Quote from McAllen coach Eliseo Pompa (as reported in a copyrighted article on Houston 5A's site):

"We played young this year. We've got some freshman playing. What happened was I think our kids have kind of regrouped after playing bad (in the tournament season). They just rose to the occasion."

In Game 1, McAllen defeated Reagan 6-2. WP: Alfaro (can't remember last name) -- a sophomore; LP: Casey Selsor

We looked really flat. Only 4 hits -- all by the meat of our lineup -- 2 errors, 5 earned runs, and a constantly-moving strike zone which frustrated both our pitcher and our hitters. Hopefully, the team will regroup for Game 2.

Huge thanks to all our friends on HSBBW for their encouragement and support! What a weekend!

The team was very sober last night after their loss and this morning as well. My son said they were really angry.

We honestly didn't know how Game 2 was going to go, but were thankful to put 5 runs up on the board in the top of the first inning. That kind of set the pace for the rest of the game. McAllen seemed increasingly disheartened as the innings went on, and our son capped the Rattlers' offensive efforts by hitting a solo HR to give Reagan a 10-run lead and end the game in 6 innings. WP: Carter Hahn (2-hitter)

The heat and humidity were extremely oppressive, but thankfully, we had the momentum as Game 3 got underway 30 minutes later. Once again, we were visitors, and I think we had 5 runs in the first inning of Game 3 also. One play that seemed to "rattle" our opponents was when the McAllen pitcher was called on a balk, which forced one of our runners in. A fun defensive play - A McAllen player hit a grounder to IF08 son at 3rd base, who promptly threw it home to prevent a run. Then our catcher threw the ball to first base to try to get the runner out, but he was safe. Then our first basemen threw the ball back to home plate to prevent a second run. A 5-2-3-2 double-play. Unbelievable! Winning pitcher Drew Martineau threw a two-hitter.

What an incredible feeling to come back from the brink of disaster and advance to regional finals - a dream come true! We face Laredo United next week and I'm told they prefer one-game series because they have only one good pitcher. We'll see who wins the flip.

Thanks again for the tremendous words of encouragement!
Thanks again for all the congratulations! Here's a recap of the game from the San Antonio Express-News:

High School Baseball: Reagan reasserts its supremacy to eliminate McAllen

ROBSTOWN — Reagan players spent Friday night somber and stunned after dropping the first game of their playoff series to McAllen.

With a new day on Saturday, the old Reagan returned.

After the Rattlers were held to four hits on Friday and lost their first game in almost two months, they bounced back with 21 total hits in 11-1 and 10-1 victories to win the Class 5A regional semifinal series at Fairgrounds Field.

“That was a 100 percent turnaround,” Reagan pitcher Drew Martineau said. “This is who we really are.”

Pitcher Carter Hahn allowed two hits in Game 2, the 11-1 six-inning run rule victory, and Martineau allowed two hits while retiring 17 batters in a row in the 10-1 Game 3 victory.

Third baseman Ben Mrachek led Reagan's scoring outburst with four runs on the day — two in each game.

McAllen (26-15), the third-place team in District 30-5A, won 6-2 on Friday to end a 19-game Reagan winning streak that began on March 8. But the Bulldogs were overmatched in Games 2 and 3 before a crowd of about 500.

Reagan (36-3) will play Laredo United in the region final, with the time and place to be determined.

“We talked about having a sense of urgency,” Mrachek said. “Everyone was pretty upset that we lost in such a bad way on Friday, and we weren't ready to go home after that.”

After sophomore Alvaro Moreno quieted Reagan's bats, allowing just four hits in Game 1, Reagan had four hits in the first inning of Game 2. The Rattlers batted around in the first inning off McAllen's James Franz (9-3), scoring five runs.

Hahn allowed two hits and improved to 9-0, while the Bulldogs didn't help themselves by committing five errors.

Mrachek sealed the Rattlers' run-rule victory with a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Every Reagan starter except catcher Santiago Ruiz scored in Game 2, and Ruiz made up for it by going 3 for 4 in Game 3.

“We played like our old selves,” Hahn said. “Yesterday was a hiccup.”

The Rattlers started Game 3 in the same fashion, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning off McAllen starter Marshall Miller (5-3).

Martineau (8-1) retired 17 batters in a row from the first inning to the end of the sixth, and Derrick Walls went 2 for 4 with two runs.

Now the Rattlers will face United, which posted a 7-6 victory over Austin Westlake on Friday. Reagan and United played in the 2006 regional semifinals, with United winning in three games. They also faced off this season on Feb. 23, an 18-3 Reagan win.

“We came into this series overconfident and got brought back down real quickly,” Reagan coach Chans Chapman said. “We're glad we're still playing and we better not make that mistake again.”
