Release

Once you obtain a release you are still eligible to play. However, the coach is under no obligation to play you as much as you did before the release. It is possible that you could be placed on the bench for the remainder of the season. If it is a scholarship case, your money will not be taken away for the current semester if you obtain a release.

Thanks for the info. He has asked for a redshirt but was denied and it is clear that he will not play very much in any event. The release (assuming it would be granted, which is questionable) would allow him to stay in shape, keep skills up, not feel like he is letting the team down and seek another situation.

I wonder why he would request the release now. I doubt he will have much success looking while other teams are in season and the other reasons you list he can accomplish without trying to get the release at this point. I know of one player who tried it the way you propose and it did not work out well at all at least from the players viewpoint. I think there is a fair amount to be lost by seeking the release now and not much to be gained. If he is on scholarship, I recommend he fulfill his end of that committment, sticks it out to the end of the season and then seek the release. I do not think the current coach will make the grass greener by having a player on the roster who he knows is looking elsewhere, even to the point of seeking the release during the season. I am not sure I could really disagree with the coach too much under these circumstances.

My son asked for a release but waited I beleive until late April because he was afraid if they know he was going to look elsewhere why play him. I can only tell you thing worked out fine, his old school actually talked to the coach at another D1 school and not only that school made an offer but several others once the word was out and actually he did not sign the paperwork (money stuff) until I think late June and started at the new school in August. Is very happy with more money and more playing time...the only problem he encounter was a different curriculm for his major and the way some of the credits transfered...

Remember it is not the coach that okays the release but the athletic director...good luck!

Thanks so much for the reply...how did you go about "getting the word out"? I'm glad to know it worked out for your son, right now things look pretty bleak to me. Its hard to believe with all the thinking, research and planning that the initial decision was so wrong.

Sometimes you can do everything right and you still get blindsided. Ditto here...I empathize.

Well, your not suppose to talk to other schools and they are not suppose to talk to you until you ge the release. But if you happen to mention it to a friend that they are going to ask for it and a friend mentions it to another friend,...well the gossip vine works in baseball too.

But basically what he did was after he got the official release call some of the other schools that were initially interested in him to see what their situation was. Also he called a scout that had asked him about signinh out of high school real low in the draft and he told him that there were a few schools where he would be glad to say a few words to the coach about him, I think that helped....and also there were some websters that will real good into passing some suggestions and contacts (very supportive.

He ended up at a school that had wanted him initially and to be honest I was worried about the whole process but my son is a confident young man and said he would find a place to play and he worked at it and did..its kind of like going through the whole process again.

Don't let things look bleak, I can tell you from experience I too wondered what went wrong because he was so sure of his initial decision. But he does say in retrospect that it was a good experience and he really learned some good study skills there..so they bring something positive out of the experience. I see you are in Florida too if you want to sent a PM, maybe I can tell you about some of the different schools....
