Recently son went from the #1 starter to the reliever/closer position. The coach likes him on defense and wants him on the field in big games. He said that he sees him more as a reliever/closer. He has been the #1 starter all 3 years he has played on varsity. He now is a junior. His record on the mound is 15-3 in a very hard conference. He also has the lowest ERA on the team. Just wanted peoples opinions but this seems like bad move to me. Son is frustrated but has no choice. This also rehashed in my mind the ridiculousness of having a "closer" for high school. Because of the shorter game length, most starting pitchers just go the whole game if they are not tiring and the pitch count is low. Also, in the some 100+ games we have played over the last 3 years that son has been on team, our pitchers have only recorded 7 saves. Just not sure what coaches are thinking?
