We are looking to return to the USA after living abroad for my kids entire lives. They are currently 11 and 13 and both are involved in baseball. My eldest son plays in the 15s and on the West Australian U14s State Team and also played in the 2010 Cal Ripken World Series.

We can move anywhere in the US and have decided that we would like to move somewhere that has an excellent high school baseball/education program for kids that want to take baseball as far as their talent will allow.

Any advice given will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

For what it's worth, we have an Australian basketball team, Victoria Metro, in town this weekend playing in a local high school tournament. The boys are staying with our basketball boys. The Aussies are loving Texas! They've been hanging out with our kids, everyone is learning something different about a different but similar culture. Even I've learned some new lingo that isn't appropriate for this board. And all the things cball says are right on the money.
Angie;

Last year our Goodwill Series teams visited Perth.
We played the WA '18 the WA '16 and WA 14.

This year our four teams are traveling to Queensland, Adelaide and Sydney for a 44 game schedule. Maybe you desire to join our Rangers '16 and under team in Brisbane Dec 18-26. Players are from California, Mexico, Colorado, Nevada,
Texas, New Mexico, New York, Alabama and Mexico.

We have 35 parents from all regions of USA traveling and two great coaches. Denny Holmberg, Rangers minor league manager and Jason Baker, California Angels Scout.

We will carry extra Rangers uniforms.

If interested please complete the profile our web site <www.goodwillseries.org>

We raised our kids here in California. The weather is great, baseball is great, BUT; I agree with CBall. California is BROKE, the tax situation is bad an only get worse with our recylced govenor.

If my kids were young; I would move to Texas (Austin/San Antonio). The cost of living is way better, life is more enjoyable and the tax stucture and the economy is far more workable.

My 2-cents.
.

Hang on to that 2¢ ILVBB..Highbeam Moonbeam has his eyes on it!

After looking at these weather stats for Perth I would recommend somewhere up in Canada for relocation...all of that Celsius, millimetre, and kilometre/hour stuff makes sense to them. They can sort it out for you.

And don't let them talk you into settling in on Baffin Island...I don't think you would like it. They play a peculiar style of baseball up there.

By the way...welcome to the HSBBW angie2005kids. And surf's up!

Having previously lived in Austin, and having spent the last decade in the Raleigh, North Carolina area, I would recommend either. Great weather, strong economies based in science/technology, terrific baseball programs, and both places generally rate high in quality of life polls.

My son played in the 2005 Cal Ripken World Series. His team was based out of the West Raleigh baseball program that has been around for more than 50 years and produced a number of terrific players (Josh Hamilton grew up in that league). When those kids hit high school they are split into 5-6 high schools that play at a very high level.

Best of luck in your search.
Once went off on some logging road near Moclips - just thought we'd do a little sight-seeing off the beaten path......but things rapidly became 'Deliverance'-like as we came upon a group of Quinault indian guys back in the woods. I don't know what they were doing but boy-howdy they started coming at the car with some serious hostility. Fortunately I was at a place where I could do a u-turn and we got out of there. I think we'd gone a little too far into the reservation lands.
Choose where to live based on your view of quality of life. Baseball will work out regardless of where you choose to live.

After living in California for twenty-two years and watching it get worse for afar ever since, it's not a place I would choose. I would choose somewhere from Virginia to Georgia.

G'Day,

You really cannot go wrong with any of the states that have been recommended so far. I of course would give my recommendation to Florida where you can play all year. The current temperature is 72 degrees and sunny which is better than just about any place in the country right now except for Hawaii. Even California gets pretty cold during the winter. As mentioned they have all sorts of financial problems as well. Florida also does not have a state sales tax which makes a big difference over time. That along with very little state regulation allows you to live about as free as any place on earth.

Good luck
I would research the education/quality of life issues, as you mentioned. Compare SAT scores for instance. There's quite a bit of disparity. As a native Texan I can underscore the need to chose a school carefully if academics are important.

Personally, if I had it to do all over again, I would look at North Carolina, with the thought that there are several excellent universities in state (thinking ahead).

If the thought of corruption makes your Aussie skin crawl then I wouldn't consider Illinois...in fact I wouldn't even book a flight that has a stopover at O'hare.

How about Massachusetts where a person can legally retire from a state job with a 90K pension, then run for office and collect another 90K in pay?

Is there a worse state in the US to live in right now? Choose a state with a robust economy and low taxes so that you can procure a job and afford all the $ you are about to spend on select baseball.
I saw a good joke after the elections ...

What's the difference between the Titanic and California? The passengers on the Titantic didn't vote to hit the iceberg.

The metro population of Perth is 1.6M. Most of the population is on the eastern side. That doesn't sound much like anywhere in California except central California.
