Remember the name Johnny Manziel. It has been incredibly fun to read about the weekly exploits of this senior quarterback at Kerrville Tivy High School (about an hour north of San Antonio). Last night he led his 4A team against highly-ranked 5A Cibolo Steele H.S., which features the top-ranked running back in the nation. Manziel wowed the crowd of 7,000, leading his team to a 54-45 victory over Steele. He completed 34 of 42 passes, throwing for 428 yards and 6 TD's, and rushed for an additional 130 yards and 2 scores, accounting for all but 14 of Tivy's 572 total yards. Last week, he completed 41 of a state-record 75 passing attempts for 503 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead his team to a 38-34 victory over another 5A powerhouse. He also ran for another 78 yards and 1 touchdown in that game, accounting for 581 of his team's 582 yards of offense.
Manziel has verbally committed to Oregon, but is reconsidering after Texas A&M offered him a scholarship 2 weeks ago. The A&M coach is having to do some fast thinking to explain why they waited so long to make an offer. UT has been interested in Manziel, but not as a QB because at 6'1, 190 lbs., he is "too short." Reminds me of former Austin, TX, standout Drew Brees, who led his 5A team to the state championship but was unrecruited by UT because he was too short. Several Pro Bowl appearances and a Superbowl victory later, I guess he proved all those naysayers wrong!
P.S. Manziel is also a gifted baseball player, having hit .416 with 7 HR's last year, and hopes to play college baseball as well.
