They are relative but a coach asks for them to make sure you are handling the competition you are playing. Also...have you ever thought it might be a test? I have asked for stats before and found they differed greatly from what a coach provided.
icare,

You can have your son ask the HS coach for his stats. All colleges do look at them, they may not mean squat but they ask on every questionnaire you fill out. We have Max preps so coach udates on ther and then you can copy them.
good idea to keep track of them yourself .On max preps they have where you stand in thre league, the section and the state so if your leading section or ranked in sate and your playing good teams it can grab some peoples attention to have them come watch.Because they do want to see you in person, no one will go off stats alone.
icare2,

when you send stats out make up a resume about your player. name, grade,ht,weight, where he has played , any references (proscouts that have seen him play, travel ball team coaches, include their names and phone number. keep it looking like a very organized resume, attach stat sheet and a small leter of intro. you can send that out to 100 collges in a couple hours. dont rest all hope into one college. also some of the smaller schools do use video, regardless of what some may tell you on here.good luck

Here is why some say stats mean squat.

Starter leaves game with men on base, reliever plunks three in a row, causing the inherited runners to score, then records teh last out.

Reliever gets the 0.00 era, starter's doesn't look pretty.

If you are concerned about stats, when asked and they aren't too impressive, give other info, for pitchers walk/strike ratio ground out/fly out ratio and for batters slugging % and on base percentage or whatever else helps to tell the story. JMO.
figures lie and liars figure. just a saying but sometimes true? Listen if you want to know how good somebody is you watch them play. If a college is going to give a scholarship to say a pitcher you see him pitch. What kind of stuff does he have. His demeanor on the mound etc etc All the stats in the world dont tell you that. It is not rocket science. watch a kid field a ball during infield you get an idea. See him swing the bat during the game. What the eye sees is what is the most important.
