Irving H.S. beats Dallas Christian 3-1
D.C. hung in for most of the game against Irving despite having all but 2 of their seniors on a ski trip!!!
I was not at the game but was told that errors hurt D.C. late in the game. I was told that it was tied 1-1 in the 5th inning and D.C. had a freshman on the mound. A very good freshman I should add!!

The Martin / Plano East game was exciting but ended with the Panthers first loss.

4 long balls! Smile Chicks love 'em.

Martin jumped off to an early 6-1 lead. East made it 6-5 with a grand slam in the 5th (Emens). Martin extended the lead with a solo HR in the 5th (Karns). East tied it with a 2-run blast in the 7th (Gomez) and Martin walked off with the game-winner in the 7th (Imhoff).

The folks at Martin/Mansfield run a great tournament.

The Panthers bounced back with an 8-1 win over Summit -- 6inn, 2-hit outing for Logan Thomas ---- Farhat had a lead-off HR.

Rockwall beat Benton, La. tonight 14-0 in the Shreveport tournament. Clinard looked good on the mound from what I was told. Travis Lites went deep. I was at the Rockwall vs. Haughton game last night and Travis Moseley threw lights out. He gave up 2 hits in the first inning and zilch from there on through 6. It was a great game against the #1 4A team in the state of La. Starting pitcher (LSU signee) went all 8 innings for Haughton and had to have thrown over 100 pitches. 100 pitches on March 2nd? That coach should be hung for doing that to that kid. I bet LSU is not happy about that!!

Lackie threw the nightcap. A little wild, but got his first varsity win! Probably a little nervous being his first varsity start on the mound. He'll bounce back though I'm sure.
Thanks collikar -- despite losing twice in the tournament, we had strong hitting and a number of good pitching performances. We need to play better defense, which has been consistent until this weekend.

Your guys didn't catch many breaks today -- and I know all teams were low on pitching by the fifth game. Our righty did a nice job in his first outing ---- we had a bit of a 3-ring circus behind our lefty.

All in all, we're proud of the Panthers this weekend.

Farhat, Slater, Gomez, Hamar, and Wylie had particularly good offensive tournaments. Snider has been a consistent force in the #5 hold.

Next week -- the Art Blair Classic in Duncanville! -- got a title to defend there. Smile

You might want to refer these young men to Dr.Conway or Conley?(-5 spelling) I hear he's the best for elbow repair. LSU signee threw 106 and then played CF next game as well as the day after. Is a tournament win really worth a young mans future? Come on coaches, you all, know better. Don't come on here with the business of, "Well the kid told me he felt great, or he wasn't gonna let me take him out of that game" You're the adult.
McKinney North wins Newman Smith tournament with 1 run win over Newman Smith. This is the 2nd year I have attended the tournament and for 2 years straight have seen some very "questionable" calls go the teams that were playing the host. What is up with that? I think I see why it is so tough to get a win there. They were so obvious, I hope the home team was embarrased.

I was not an attendant at the game and nor do I have any affiliation with any of the teams represented. The Chapter that does their games for the district assigns umpires to tournament games. What is always obvious to you in the stands is a lot faster on the field when a call is being made; especially a banger. I would be careful when questioning the integrity of participants and officals. If you think people are being homered then become an official and do something about it.

I don't have to become an ump to do it.

I was at the game.

It was an embarassment to umps everywhere and not a good reflection on Newman Smith.

The solution is not to become an ump and do something about it.

The result will be that teams will not continue to enter that tournament.

Clean it up.

You bring up a good point as well. However we all know that teams will continue to participate in the tournament. That particular school has a rich tradition in baseball and in my opinion why blame the school; they didn't hand pick the officals. If the officals were as bad as I'm being lead to believe then the Coach should ask not to have those officals back at his games.

Amen.

I don't blame the school. It enjoys one of the richest baseball traditions, anywhere.

The coaches do have the ability to not ask those officials back.

If they expect to keep their rich baseball tradition and have schools continue to be interested in playing their tournament, they need to employ competent and unbiased officials.

Those two the other night were so bad they couldn't even hide their tweaking..........

DeSoto had a good weekend at the South Grand Prairie Warrior Classic.

We opened with a loss to SGP 12-2, then ran off three straight wins against...
Bishop Dunne 12-4
Berkner 7-1
Grand Prairie 5-2

We lost to Midlothian 6-1 in the consolation championship game, they have a fine squad. I am very proud of my kids who played 3 games on Saturday, beginning at 8am and ending around 8:30pm.

Gotta love tournament season!!!
Regarding monitoring pitch count, I agree on some levels, but i think last 4 weeks of scrimmages and practices are what you use to gradually condition your arm for the workload. You can go to a ton of collee box scores and NCAA pitchers are already working up to the 100-pitch range, you gotta think MOST of the college coaching staffs have a clue what they can handle.
Funneldrill,

As a DeSoto alum, I was impressed with how you handled the DeSoto team in the tourney...you seem to play to your teams strengths rather well...you guys played solid defense (good outfield play)lots of team speed and a lot of "small ball"...you scored most of your baserunners against us. Your center fielder impressed me (although i wish he didnt run down my sons deep fly to the fence in left center).

We opened the tourney beating Midlothian in a close one (throw out at the plate in the 7th), lost a close one to Irving - 3 to 2 (winners of the tourney), but you guys seemed to handle us without too much trouble.

Well done. Good luck this season.
Thanks Berknerdad.

The tournaments are great in that they provide coaches lots of opportunity to get lots of work to lots of kids, especially pitchers. This tournament unfortunately exposed one pitcher who is not ready to perform at the varsity level for us. It may have also told us who our #2 pitcher is. I have tried to convince myself that this certain kid can not be our #2 because he is a Freshman. But all he has done in 3 outings is get hitters out. Not overpowering, but throws all 3 pitches for strikes in any count.
The initial reubuttal was purely to the 100+ pitch count, as was my initial response. And I am aware that this is not entirely related since it wasn't necessarilly early March, but I did hear a blurb last year in the post season about Tim Hudson (while at Clemson) cutting it loose from center the day after a start on the hill.
Guys, I recognize the frustration of tough calls -- but do these tournaments mean that much -- to anyone? Don't get me wrong -- if you feel strongly about the umpires, contact their chapters or tournament officials or whatever....but I hope you all can pull something positive out of these early season outings.

If you're a coach that reads this message board....and you feel particularly puffed up because your team "won" one of these things despite questionable calls by home officials --- then, simply put, shame on you. What goes around.....well, you know how it works.

My son had to sit out 4 of our 5 games (several ankle sprain) --- I wish we had those 4 games back in preparation for district play. And I, for one, am thankful for the lovely weather --- here's to another perfect baseball weekend....beginning next Thursday. Smile

Good points, SGDad.
