johntaine, just a thought -- in this forum when the question is about a specific rule, I'm not sure anyone benefits from a response which:

- makes an absolute statement ("Runner must touch base he is on after every foul ball.") without quoting where and from which rulebook this comes from

-OR-

- offers an answer that begins with "I'm not sure about ..." or "I think you can ...".

Let's leave this to the guys who really know -- and we've got some good ones out there.

5.09e says the runners are toi return to their bases after an uncaught foul ball. It also states that the umpire isn't to put the ball into play until they do. There is no penalty listed if they don't because then umpire is supposed to be paying attention and not putting the ball in play.
The reason this was made a rule was because before runners were required to return they would stop halfway or more so they didn't have far to go on a hit.
The accepted practice is they must return to the area around their base. In other words they don't have to touch just get close.
