Look at the track record of Coach Cleanthes. He is a proven winner. He has taken a program that was not very good and turned it into a very respectable program in no time. It is not easy to win at Rhodes with the academic requirements that they have. Very few Memphis area kids that were difference makers ever considered Rhodes before he arrived. Now he has gotten a few and it has made a huge difference in his program. One of the Memphis area players was named TBR Small College Player of the Year for 2006.
My son plays at Rhodes now and loves it. The school and the baseball team are a great fit for him. In three years Coach Cleanthes has taken a mediocre program and made Rhodes a contender in the SCAC, a very competitive conference. The Lynx are 5-1 so far in 2007 and the year ahead looks bright. Rhodes is an excellent academic institution; our son is challenged and invested in his studies. Finally Memphis is a great town for a 20 year old.

My advice is have your son spend a weekend when they have a couple of home games.

Good Luck.

IM me if you have other questions.
I am friends with two families who have daughters attending Rhodes and they both love the school and can't say enough good things about Rhodes. One daughter is a Junior on the basketball team and is pleased with their athletic and academic programs. The other girl, a Senior, has served as a RA, Student Intern and is excelling academically. I hope this info is helpful.

Thanks, everyone! We have heard NOTHING but good about the school and the baseball program and it has all just reinforced our perceptions.

Our son has been accepted early decision, so he will be attending next year. He knows that he will be challenged by both athletics and academics. He knows that he will have to work hard to be successful in either and seems committed to doing so.

Seemed like the right fit for our son from the start (although he got there in kind of a convoluted manner). No second thoughts - we are all very happy for him, feel that he is very fortunate to have the opportunity, and think that he made the right decision - just wanted to know other's personal experiences.

So, thanks for the usual HSBW incredible level of support and great information sharing.

Now, can we please have some weather appropriate for high school baseball??? Blue skies and warm breezes for all!
Of all the schools we've looked at on the web, my son keeps coming back, mentally, to Rhodes. He just says it feels like 'home' when he studies their website.

Filled out the online baseball form a couple days ago, and hope to start getting some back-and-forth going........

It's pretty expensive, though, which worries ol' dad just a bit!

Krakatoa...

Your quote scares me immensely. Not at all sure where on the map "Neither Here Nor There" is, but you must go see a school before your son commits... especially at the cost that a Rhodes must be asking (I would guess 40+ per annum?).

I see you went to Wazzu and UCSTD. Could you imagine trying to pick between the two from a website? Pullman vs SB? Same holds true for UNR vs Rhodes...

I went to school in Missoula... sight unseen. When my Dad drove me out from Chicago to go to school in 1972, we stopped in Bozeman. I saw that campus for the first time and was ready to tell my Dad to turn around and go home. I had not seen UofM, but instantly fell in love with the place once we got to Missoula....LUCKY cadDAD. But remember, a college education in those days was $3500 per year all-in. Not much downside to going for a semester and then transferring.

I have read the thread on Rhodes and it sounds like a marvelous school/baseball program, et al... but spend the money and go see first hand.

Coaches seem a world different when they are recruiting kids at a showcase (as opposed to at their own school)... and a light year of distance, once you have committed.

Good luck. Choices are a high class problem to have....

YO!! Let me just clarify. We are NOT Korean -- just work over here!! I've been all over the US, worked and lived in Michigan, Georgia, California, Washington...and have driven across country about a dozen times. I know the lay of the land pretty well, and maybe that's why I'm comfortable guiding my son's choices in region/state. There's not many places I haven't been in the US.....but some I'd have been better off avoiding.....and some I would return to again and again...... Big Grin
Here's a photo of your friendly neighborhood KRAK-ster on a riverboat in Malaysia......just a regular American dude, floatin' on a boat in Asia......

Peninsular.....heading upriver to Taman Negara....last refuge of the Black Rhino...lots of tigers and elephants....of course it's very rare to see any of those critters.....but we did see a wild pig mother with a bunch of baby pigs...very destructive....and found a snakeskin on the trail that was about 20 feet long....and seemed to be broken about in the middle.....needless to say we moved on very quickly!!
Just wanted to say that I am so glad I found this website. One of the coaches from Rhodes recently placed a recruitment call to my son. At the time we knew nothing about the school. We did some web research and liked what we saw. Based on that and now the comments made about the school and the baseball program at this forum--we will certainly be planning a visit in the near future. The school is at the top of our prospect list. Thanks to all!

LOL gotwood! I just happened on this thread and was quite confused until I saw the date! Of course we didn't watch you and the girls! We were busy making our own show down here! Wink

Glad to hear C is continuing to do well at Rhodes!
It's been a while since I've posted, but seeing Rhodes College being discussed...I couldn't resist offering my experiences. I coached against Rhodes for a number of years while I was at Trinity University in San Antonio, and I got to see them in the worst of times as well as in the beginning of this new era. I was one one of the finalists for the head coaches job at Rhodes when it was posted a few years ago, and I must say that after the time I spent on campus interviewing I hoped and prayed that I would be offered the position. The positive attributes of the school, the direction they wanted to go with the program, and the city of Memphis all left an amazing impression on me. Coach Cleanthes is a fantastic baseball coach, and like most D-III coaches he is most concerned with the overall development of the individual, not just the baseball player. Under Coach Cleanthes, the program has gone from being at the bottom of a very tough D-III conference (SCAC) to being on the verge of making some noise on the national level. Rhodes would be a wonderful situation for any true student-athlete, and I would recommend that anybody who may be shown interest by this school or this coaching staff take a serious look at how well this school will prepare them to enter the "real world" the day that they put on the cap and gown.
