I'd heard he was in bad health but this is very sad news. Class act all his life.

Chewing tobacco... Another great life lost... so freakin' sad. R.I.P. Mr. Padre... Like to dip? Watch this NOW:www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pEAjphgW7s
Though I agree about dip. His DR. has said it wasn't the cause. One of the greatest hitters who ever played the game. That word great is thrown around so much these days it has lost its meaning. But in this case it is the only word that's appropriate. Batting titles, run creating, winning. All without the home run. Wonder how he would be judged today with his game not a power game.
People will say it's a loss to the baseball world. But to some people he's dad, husband, sibling, neighbor, friend and coach to people close to him.

Ichiro is considered by many to be a no-doubt HOFer and a generational talent. He's about the closest thing we've seen to Gwynn at the plate, only Gwynn was better in pretty much every hitting category over the course of his career. Hitters hit, and Gwynn was one of the greatest to ever to do it.

RIP.
JH couldn't agree more. The reason I asked that question is it seems nowadays there is supposed to be a predisposition on what a hitter should bring to each position. I have always held to the opinion that a great hitter is a great hitter and should not be held to position, ie... first and third, outfield corner guys(which Gwynn was) should be power guys. I think that kind of thinking is a little narrow. A great hitter will drive in and create runs regardless as your example of Ichiro is a great one to that end.

Give me a lineup of nine guys that get on base a ton and I'll win a lot of baseball games. The way to be a good offensive player is to not make outs, and Gwynn was one of the best ever at doing so.
agreed 100%
Very sad to hear this news. A great player and person has passed.
