My son was offered a roster-only spot at his dream D1 school - with the suggestion he could earn scholarship money perhaps his so, jr or sr year.  Tough decision - but we chose another (both instate and scholarship) route.  We just weren't comfortable paying out of state tuition on a handshake.

Turns out the HC (and staff) did not have their contacts renewed and new coaches will be entering the program.  What would have happened in this case? Would the new HC honor the roster only offer?  Would he even know about it in the transition?  Would we have been SOL?

Just wondering...maybe someone out there has had a similar experience.  I'm thrilled we went the route we went (especially considering this) but it just makes me wonder...

Red flag."Roster spots" are only verbal and the new coach may not even know your son exists. You do not even exist as an "athlete" in most college systems until later in the fall once practice starts. One of my son's offers was exactly your situation and the new coach rapidly brought in his own guys.

BASEBALLFAN2012,

It sounds to me like your son avoided a potentially sticky situation.  Good for him!  If you've spent any time on this website long enough you hear all the stories.  I've heard of coaches honoring the previous coaches commitment and I've heard of coaches not honoring the previous coaches commitment.   What I've observed in a typcial D1 regime change (due to poor results the previous year) is the coach will bring in all kinds of D1 and JUCO transfers.   This leaves the underclassmen in a more difficult situation with respect to playing time and future scholly's.  If the Coach did not directly recruit you.....you are not one of his guys.  JMO.

Suffice to say there was a lot more risk & potential heartburn involved that your son probably didn't want to have to deal with as incoming freshmen struggling to find his way academically and socially.  What was his dream school could have been a nightmare.  Best of luck to him.
