HS Rules. Man on 1st, ball hit to third, 3rd throws to 2nd for 1 out and 2nd baseman makes throw to 1st but not in time.

The original R1 ran to second and disrupted the play had no contact was made because he was at least 10 feet way. He did run striaght to the bag but never attempted a slide. Ump called it itnerference. Does R1 have a requirement eihter to slide or " break off" and give the 2nd baseman a clear lane to 1st?
To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.

In a word, yes.
If the umpire determines that the runner altered the play of the 2nd baseman by running at him in a standing position then the runner is guilty of interference.
On a force play the runner must slide directly to the bag or he can slide or run in a direction away from the fielder.
