Bases loaded no outs, looper is hit towards first base and lands at edge of outfield grass. First baseman is positioned about a foot in front of runner and to runner's right hand. Ball was hit over first baseman's left shoulder. He turns to right and runs back into the runner at 1st. 2nd baseman dives for ball but doesn't catch it. 1st baseman doesn't get close. Since the first baseman was positioned the way he was and had he turned over the correct shoulder in the first place, is this really interference? What could the runner have done differently? The contact was minimal, if that matters. I think it should be a no call. Am I right?

Only one fielder is entitled to interference protection at a time, so the umpire must determine which one that is at that moment.

If he protected F4 here, then no interference. If it was F3, then it very likely was interference. The runner's 'intent' means nothing- if he impeded F3 and he had the play on the ball, runner is guilty. However, if it was F4's ball all the way, its not impossible that F3 was guilty of obstruction of the runner...HTBT.

Without seeing the play and both F4 and F3's positions relative to the ball, its really tough to say. The mere fact that F4 dived for the ball doesn't mean he had a better play on it than F3 did.
