QUESTION; As Plate Umpire
With a runner on 1B
On a base hit, start to rotate to third as a play on R1 at 3B is your responsibility. You should start up the line in foul territory. When both the runner and the ball are going to third enter the diamond, at the cutout, to make the call.
On an overthrow at 3B, work the inside of the diamond and take the runner to home.
Is this the correct mechanics even though I would be in the field of play?

Yes. Do not go into fair ground unless/until your are certain there will be a play at 3rd. Once you are 'inside', you stay there until playing action has ceased. If there's a subsequent play at home (overthrow at 3rd), you move to HP in fair territory, parallel to the 3rd base line. The PU can beat the runner to home by virtue of the fact he's not making a wide turn, and the runner usually is.
Pologreen,
One of the adages in umpiring is "angle over distance". better to have the best angle than be right on top especially in the case of the possiblity of another play....

there are sacrifices in 2 man mechanics...When you are young and quick you can cover the ground and get virtually on top of the play and then in case of an overthrow, outrun the player to the plate.

For most of us that isnt the best way...watch the play develop and let the ball take you into the play....you dont need to get on top of the play to make the call....when the play is imminent move to the best angle to get the call...

Then if there is a play after that you are in an area to correct and be in a good position to make any subsequent call.....a good angle and a call made not moving is far better....

hope this helps

Wait, where's your partner, he's getting paid too.
If your talking "two man" that is?

What if it's a base hit down the RF line, in that case what we practice is; U1 has FF/CNC and B2 has R1 to 3rd, and BU takes HP. Other wise I fully agree with your OP.

So a pre-game with your partner is very important, wouldn't want B2 to hang ya out on a stickler down the RF line. "But you said you had R1 clear to 3rd.

Read, react and don't hesitate to communicate to your partner/s.
PeeUUU, I did kinda hose that one up.
I had just washed my hands and couldn't do a thing with em....

What my fingers wrote: "What if it's a base hit down the RF line, in that case what we practice is; U1 has FF/CNC and B2 has R1 to 3rd, and BU takes HP."

What my fingers should have written:

U1 has FF/CNC, U2 has R1 to 3rd as well as BatterRunner into 2B. With U1 taking home.

That looks a lot better.
