Tough work for U1 on this play.

Not really...there are tougher.

PU backs up into foul territory on 1BLE instead of going down the line. He can see fair/foul, catch/no catch and have the tag up at third in his peripheral vision.

Tougher, IMO, is a bunted ball on the first baseline with R2 taking off on the pitch and maybe touching third as he rounds it.

Is BU the Base Umpire or Plate? I assume it's plate because the Base Umpire is positioned on the SS side of the infield and has no call on this play in the right field corner.

If the Plate umpire comes off the line he'd better hope the ball is not touched at or near the line and dropped. Regardless of his call He'll be getting it from one of the coaches for being out of position on the 1st prioirty of the play...fair/foul. The touch is the 3rd priority after the catch. IMO in order to stay in position to see everything the best he can do is back up into foul behind the plate in line with first base and see the runner is his periphal vision as described. Otherwise he goes up the first base line makes the fair/foul and catch and then swings around to see where the runner is and make a judgement about if he left too soon.

My mistake on the "BU/PU" thing. I corrected that.

I never said he goes "off the line". I said he backs up in foul territory on, 1BLE (First baseline extended). He's on the line to make the Fair/Foul call and the catch/no catch with third base in his peripheral. This, in my career, is a common and frequent play that hasn't caused any heartburn.
