What do you think of a highly ranked, major conference, D1 team stealing bases with an 8-0 lead in the third inning? A 9-0 lead in the fourth inning? Is this early enough to still be using all the tools? They had already won the first two games of the series. They were hammering the ball in the first four innings. They continued to hammer the ball and won by a football score. The opposing team is playing .400 ball in conference.

I've always been of the thought process, "If you don't like it, play better." But I was surprised to see one team doing this to another conference team. The coaches are usually a fraternity. All I could think is they were trying to run up the score for ranking. They ultimately ran it up with their bats which is fine.

Who came up with the idea that 8 runs is a sure victory in HS baseball??

Anybody know???
My apologies for lack of clarity. I've edited the post to include "major conference, D1." I'd prefer the post not get hijacked by others for opinions on high school ball. It's a college ball question.
in a major conferance game at any level,i would assume both team's are good. 3rd up 8-0 or not the catcher has a chance/or should have, to throw them out stealing.

not real sure there is any coaching fraternity on the field. they are coaching to win.and you can't coach players to hold back.

play to win and stick with the plan, the sun don't shine on the same dog's butt all the time.
RJM,

This one is a no-brainer - IMO.

In todays college game - with well trained - and well conditioned young athletes swinging $400 metal rocket launchers - it goes without saying that a team could score 2 - or even 3 touchdowns in a few innings.

8 runs doesnt mean anything - especially in the 3rd inning.

You need to run like a wild dog - and hope the other team doesnt launch 10 homeruns with the bazooka bats in the next inning.
My perception may be skewed by one team being a powerhouse and the other a bottom feeder in the conference. The lesser team was starting a 6.63 ERA. He was followed by 7.97, 5.40, 7.56, 7.71 and 9.00. This team had shot it's wad in the first two games and lost. The better team is loaded with pitching. The losing coach must have had enough as the game got out of control. He brought in his closer at the end. He gave up a granny (one of those days). I was watching with the dad of the closer. The dad wasn't thrilled his son was pitching for the fifth time in six days in a lost cause.

I didn't think the lesser team had a chance in hell going into the game, much less the way the better team hammered the ball in the first three innings to build an 8-0 lead.

I agree with the above, not a safe lead on a sunday, anything can happen.

If it continues late in the 8th or after, it most likely means the coach is playing payback.

However if I am thinking of the same game as you are talking about, after looking at boxscore, don't know how much the coach could have done, he was already putting in his subs. There were 6 walks in less than 5 innings.
