Sac bunt?

Runner on 2nd, batter lays down a bunt to move runner to 3rd. Pitcher throws hitter/runner out at 1st. 1B throws ball to C at the plate who tags out runner that kept running around 3rd.

Would the batter still be credited with a sac bunt? I said 'yes' because the runner reached 3rd safely; but another scorer said 'no' ... that it was a double-play and the sac bunt would not be credited to the hitter. This doesn't seem correct.

Rule 10.08 governs the scoring of sacrifice bunts, and the phrase "double play" doesn't occur in that rule.

If the batter is put out, was judged to be bunting for a sacrifice, and at least one runner advances one base, it is scored a sacrifice, except if any runner is put out before advancing one base.

Maybe the other scorer was confused and thinking of RBIs. A batter is not credited with an RBI if he grounds into double play.

Simply put, you don't punish the batter because the base runner made a bone headed mistake trying to advance a second base on a bunt. If he gave himself up and succeeded in getting him moved up one base, it's a hit.

It's in some ways comparable to the guy who gets out trying to stretch a hit into a double. You still credit him with a single despite his being out at the end of the play.
