Congratulations to Coach Christiansen!
That is interesting that they would announce him being that they just announced that Coach Smith was retiring after this season and they did not do a National or even a extensive search within Calif.

This is good for Sac State. Coach Christiansen is a solid baseball coach and very hard working recruiter. When Coach Smith hired him, he was the #1 candidate that they wanted, and he's earned the respect of all the players who were already in the program. From what I know, I think it was a pretty easy choice for the AD to name him at this time.
I think this is a very positive development for Hornet baseball, and the program will improve under Coach Christiansen's leadership.

There are probably a few bummed out coaches that wanted to try for that job as the program has a lot of upside. Coach Christiansen has been seen in socal quite a few times this past summer and should get results on the recruiting trail very quickly.
Well BOF I'm out of touch these days but would you like to sart a new thread and make some overly early predictions as to the outcome of the some of the league races for 2010? You know a lot of players outside of your son's league as well.

BTW my son played against Westmont College yesterday, they seemed like they are getting it together, some good looking players and they get their new field in January. Place you should check out.

I would think he would want to concentrate on players from his own backyard (at least initially) than SoCal. If he can recruit the local kids there is no reason they should not improve quickly. I dont think currently that local kids have Sac St. on their wish list. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
It is kinda a chicken and the egg situation.
For Sac State to keep the big name players to stay home, they need a successful program, but in order to win, they need to find several impact players or those players who are a diamond in the rough and he needs to expand throughout the state to do that.

It isn't going to happen overnight, but expect the program to improve in a meaningful way under Coach Christiansen's leadership. He's one of the harder working recruiters out there, and I expect him to build a good coaching staff that will have additional recruiting talent.
I can tell you this for sure, he did not take this job to maintain the status quo, he wants to improve significantly, and he's laying a good foundation to acheive exactly that. It'll take a few years, but I won't be surprised if they make it to a regional inside of 5 years.
