Chipper Jones announced today that he will be hanging up the cleats at the end of the season. As a lifelong Braves fan it will be hard to not get a bit misty eyed after that final game. Gotta love a guy that plays the game the right way for 19 years while maintaining loyalty to the same team.

No question in my mind. Should be 1st ballot. Never even got mentioned in all the steroid debates over the years. Very little controversy surrounding him.

Not only does he have the numbers, but one of the most memorable things about him was several years ago, the Braves wanted to bring a big name player to the team (don't remember who it was). They were having trouble making the salary cap to do it. Chipper volunteered to defer some of his salary in order to accomplish this. I know that eventually, he would get his money. But, how often do you hear of a player doing something like that to benefit the team. I don't know if I've ever heard of it. Classy guy and one of the best switch hitters of all time.
My husband was born in Wisconsin so Braves fan for 60 plus years. So son grew up Braves fan and avid Chipper Jones fan.Chipper is his favorite all time player. The Braves just wont be the same without him Frown My son and husband followed the Braves for a week years ago,and their hotel was across the street. They also spent a week in Atlanta taking in games. My son got to meet Chipper and many other Braves and has his picture with them. Those were such fun days, son was an avid collector of baseball memorbilila.

Love Chipper, will miss him a lot.
Living in central Fl we are obviously Rays fans, but of course my husband and I have been Braves fans forever, and they are definitely our favorite NL team. Our first out of state vacation with the boys was a July 4th to run Peachtree and see a few Braves games. The Braves are our son's favorite team period. We go in with two other families for a Rays weekend season package. Today was the day we split tickets up. First thing my son said was, "Mom, get the Brave games. I don't care what you have to give up to get them." Well-- I got them, so we will get to see Chipper live one more timeSmile
For overall performance Jones is the fourth greatest third baseman of all time behind Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, and George Brett. Brooks Robinson while perhaps the benchmark for fielding third basemen was not even close to Jones as an offensive player. If you are the fourth greatest at any position after a century and a half of ML baseball then I would say you are a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Chipper is/always will be a baseball icon in our family. When TBS broadcast all of the Braves games back-in-the-day, GUN was glued to the TV set.

GUN started wearing #10 because of Chipper, switch hit because of Chipper, played 3rd base and went to bat for years with a Chipper baseball card in his helmet padding.

Great player, good times! NO doubter... GED10DaD

Really????You think that???? Why?

Entering this season Chipper's career numbers's are a .304 Batting Average, .402 on-base%, and .533 SLG%

To date, only six players have finished their careers with a .300 average, .400 on-base percentage, and .500 slugging percentage in 10,000 or more plate appearances: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Tris Speaker, Frank Thomas and Mel Ott, all of whom were outfielders or first basemen.
I think a lot of people don't look at Chipper as a super star type. He has gone about his business in a fairly unspectacular way for such a long time.

IMO, he is truly one of the best. He would have to have a lot of voters leave him off to not make it first year. Some of that could have to do with who else is eligible in 2018 and that will include anyone else who ends their career this year and of course those who missed being elected in previous years. I think he is first ballot HOF fairly easily. Who else might retire after this year?
