I couldn't find the previous discussion so I'm starting a new one. After attending an SJU game today I wanted to add to the discussion on Penders quitting and their field situation.

Penders left on his own accord. He did not leave out of frustration over any situation. A few years ago he left pro baseball to coach SJU due to a family situation that lended itself to him being home more often. With the situation resolved he returned to scouting. The players like the interim head coach and hope he's named full time head coach.

As for the current field situation, there is a new facility in development on property adjacent to the campus SJU recently purchased.

SJU is a good school. Combined with a new facility to aid recruiting, I believe the program has great potential for the future.

I didn't ask when it will be done. I would think 2010 at the latest. SJU is in an OK part of town. I don't know what there is to do over there. I've only been to a couple of basketball games there. The new field I believe will be across City Line Ave in Merion Station which is a very nice (affluent neighborhood) area.
The school is in a Bad Area. I was just at Seton Hall same deal. Philly has some great spots but you don't want to walk around off Campus at night,It's not safe.Period! But.. Jesiut Education Great School, Baseball,? The Head Coach Quit. They purchased a large parcel of land (Epis acad.)adjacent to the school, they have $$ Baseball fac. will be Nice down the road.High $$ tuition. My Daughter graduated in 2004.

I addressed that in a previous post. SJU wasn't expecting him to stay long. He left for a great pro job at a significant pay increase.

A friend's son plays there. The dad told me during the recruiting process he asked the coach why he was there and how long he was staying. The coach assured him if he left the team would be left in good hands. The players like the assistant who became the interim coach. He has a shot at getting the job.

They need a quality facility for recruiting. It's coming. The school may be pricey, but they give a lot of academic money.

I'm not a fan of the program. But I'll give them credit for heading in the right direction. I met Shawn Penders once. He's a gentleman.
From what I've heard I believe SJU believed he was the best choice at the time given the health of the program. I've heard he got a lot done behind the scenes to right the ship. The baseball family (players/parents) is happy with the interim coach. There's a new facility on the way. The future is looking up for the program.
The friend/parent I talked to said the kids like the interim head coach. He used to be the head coach of a crosstown team. He was brought into the SJ program this year. A former head coach comes in to a situation where the current head coach was up front he would't be there long term. Let's read between the lines on that one. Anyone want to bet against the interim getting hired full time, unless someone they can't turn down applies? The turning point will be the new facility. I can't imagine a D1 program with a worse field in the country. Plus it's twenty miles from campus.

I agree with TR. The area around SJU isn't that dangerous. I'd call it a "mind your own business and don't start something" neighborhood. I never felt in danger walking down the street to basketball games. SJU is close to downtown and Manayunk (popular weekend night spot). The new facility will be across City Line Avenue in Merion Station. It's in a neighborhood with posh homes.
