Jeff Samardzija apparently has said today in a additio signing a new contract with the Cubs that he will not persue a career in the NFL. Frankly, this suprsies me. He is obviously a unique person with uniquely God-given talent, and I'm suprised to not see him try to play both as he seemed to have wanted for a while now. Any thoughts?

I'm sure something more than meets the eye went into making this decision, although that does not change the fact that I am suprised.

The only person in recent times that comes to mind that had real success in two professional sports was Bo Jackson (and there ain't too many Bo Jacksons); and football then destroyed both careers for him. As a USC fan it's hard to admit, but Samardzija must have learned something while under the Golden Dome Wink. Good choice on his part.

Just thinking- Jordan tried two sports Roll Eyes, danny ainge, josh booty, drew henson. some have tried and most have failed. just toooooooo tough at that level.
He also has a "no trade" claus in his contract. He is an "in your face" type pitcher.

Another pitcher from Notre Dame, Grant Johnson, signed with the Cubs two years ago, but not for that kind of money. Johnson, who went to my sons high school, Lyons Township in La Grange, IL, had Tommy John surgery after his freshman year at ND. Came back strong after a year in rehab and signed with the Cubs, I believe for 2.5 million. Supposed to be like a Mark Prior, I only hope without all of the injuries.

Samardzija can "bring-it" and should be a great addition, if he stays health.
