Samford is in the process of moving from the OVC to the Southern Conference, so a key ingredient for any player will be a portable DVD player and a laptop for the bus rides. The closest in-conference rival is Chattanooga, but they don't play baseball. That makes Furman (in Greenville SC) or The Citadel (in Charleston, SC) the closest foes, which is a haul from Birmingham.

Seriously. It's a great school academically.

Obviously, Football was the driving force in the decision to change conferences. The SoCon is a powerhouse in the FCS (D1-AA) ranks. Over the past 22 years, current members have won the championship 9 times. The baseball ain't bad either (in fact, it's very good). The basketball in the SoCon is terrible. The S****r is very good.
Samford head coach Casey Dunn is one of the "good guys"! Coach Dunn is young and energetic. Played in college at Auburn University as a catcher ---- Of course I'm partial to Auburn catchers Wink. Samford has a good reputation both athletically and academically. If they are showing interest in your son it should be taken seriously. A good college will work with your son and his academics by scheduling classes and working with those professors that allow make-up test and such. ’08 will be their first year to change conf. and with that move comes the traditional Fri-Sa-Su match-ups. Not sure how they will travel. Going to away weekends most teams will leave campus on Thursday afternoon and head back on Sunday afternoon. Friday classes of the "away weekends" are the only classes that are missed.
Samford is showing interest and is my son's first choice. Son is a good student, so maybe that will help him! We were very impressed with everything, but its not close to home so we are also kind of in the dark. Several dads at the camp told me they think Coach Dunn will be the next Auburn coach whenever that job comes open. Everyone seems really impressed with him.
