My options are very limited in rural Tennessee as far as internet goes. No cable, DSL, or any other hard wired connections. I have become so frustrated with dial-up I have ordered "Wild Blue" satellite internet. The anticipation of being able to do something other than “wait” is getting to me and was wondering if anyone has any experience with satellite internet. Do you ever exceed the threshold (fair access policy)? And have you had any virus problems? Your comments are appreciated?

So does this mean you can get rid of the string betweeen the tin cans now? Smile
My dad has Hughes net - which I think is basically the same concept. He has had it for about 5 years, and has generally been happy.

I have used it a few times when I have been visiting him and tested it using www.dslreports.com to see what the speed has been like - and generally have gotten numbers like 600K down load 150K upload. Better than dialup - not as good as DSL or Cable modem - but then again neither of those options are available to him.

Weather impacts the signal - and can knock you off the air.

Hope this helps

GW and D10, Some people still use the string and the cans here in Tennessee but being on a "party line" we tend to get the lines all crossed up. The old fashioned "hollering" back and forth at each other still works the best! Big Grin
CatSureMom, I had Wildblue installed yesterday and all seems great to this point. There are some front end cost of about $300 but with cancelling AOL and removing the land line I will actually save money in the long run. I got the slowest version of Wild Blue which is still 10X faster than dialup and is always on. (It’s so quick I’m thinking about downloading me some more Waylon and Willy music CD’s). The installation does include a satellite dish on the roof but the “dish” anywhere on your property is a status symbol here in Tennessee. Even the trailers have a dish in the yard --- may not be hooked up but they have a dish. All you need is a clear view of the southern sky a few bucks and presto you can be high speed!!

08dad, thanks for the response. We were typing at the same time. HughesNet and WB are the same concept and are not as fast as DSL but if you want to spend around $80 a month you can increase the download from 600K to around 1.5MB. Both are a great improvement over the 56K dialup (whick connects about 30K).
Thanks
