Is it possible to combine specific parts of the SAT test and not others?

For example, I took the test in May and got excellent numbers on two of the sections, both above the 90th percentile. In another section I got a lower grade, about the 80th percentile. Let's say hypothetically I take the test again in October and get a higher grade on the section that I got the 80th percentile on but a lower grade on the sections in which I did very well the first time. Is it possible to select the three best scores that you have and enter those to the colleges or do you have to use just the scores that you got on one test?

JH, all of your SAT scores will be sent to the colleges by the collegeboard - you can't pick and choose. But many colleges do "superscore" - they take the highest score for each section from all test dates and consider the total of the 3 highest scores from all sittings for the test as your SAT. Not every school does this. You'll have to check with each of the schools you are looking at - some college websites specifically address this point. The coach will also know if his school superscores or not.

Have you taken the ACT? With the ACT, you can elect to send scores from one test date and not another.

Not necessarily, as pointed out by PIS. Many schools do this, but not all. He will need to check with the individual schools to find out for sure.

Don't worry about all scores being sent. The school will either consider your highest overall score or your best "superscore". Lower scores on other tests will not influence them.
You're absolutely right and I apologize...not ALL colleges superscore, but after having gone through the college admission process, I have found that schools who do not use the highest combined scores are the exception. There are a few schools who use the highest single sitting, though, so retaking still is not a bad idea. The easiest way to find out what a school does is to call their admissions office. Also, check to see if the college you are interested in considers the writing score. I believe some consider it with a lesser emphasis (i.e. SAT II score) and some are not really using it at all yet (2009 is the target for the writing score to be an integral part of the SAT score/admission process).
Thanks to all for the responses. I have signed up for the 10/06 SATs and hopefully can bring that specific section up. We will see what happens, but at least I feel I have a good overall score.

As I get closer to deciding on specific schools, I will call the admissions offices at the school and find out if they superscore. If they do, that's even better for me I guess. Thanks a lot and Coach Merc, I'll see you around this fall
