Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling sure has started off this season in a good way. Here's a clip from him pitching on opening day against the Rangers...

I think he sat in the low 90's (i.e. 91-93mph) for most of that game.

Any thoughts?

He's got what they call in golf the "x" factor, at least to me, which is when the hips explode and follow with the arm. Pretty solid hip rotation... Beckett is the best at that.

I think one of Schilling's strengths is to be able to hit the corners at high 80s low 90s and then throw the high hard one at 95 or 96. Haven't seen him pitch yet this year.

Schilling and Beckett both had good outings again, each now 3-0. I's great having them both on the same staff, with another power pitcher in Papelbon. It's pretty educational for my pitcher son to watch these guys pitch.

I don't mean to correct an amazing pitcher like Curt but out of his balance he swings his leg open almost like a gate rather then going right to the plate, I wouldn't be suprised if this pitch was outside.

What this does is allow him to keep his hips closed longer which allows them to more rapidly pull his shoulders around. This is a key to his velocity.

It isn't necessary to sweep with the front foot in order to keep the hips closed.
