We are all aware of the NCAA and the meager scholarships they “allow” for a baseball team. This morning I read an article about college rodeo and was surprised that student/athletes can earn money professionally (rodeo) and at the same time receive a college scholarship to participate in rodeo. Is this unfair?

From the newspaper article:

Because rodeo is not an NCAA sport, cowboys and cowgirls can earn money professionally.

"There are scholarships, but we have to pay for our expenses too," Smith said. "A lot of kids play for their school like that.

"My past three years I have done both. You can do two professional rodeos and one college rodeo in one weekend."

Smith did not specify prize amounts but he said Atchison won between $1,500-$2,000 at a college rodeo, and Smith can pay rent and tuition from his combined earnings.
