I am trying to understand how the two forms of scholarship monies work. I know that Georgia and Lousianna both have in-state academic scholarship awards and I do not think that these take away from the 11.7 D1 baseball scholarships.

If a kid is offered 50% at State U {not GA or LA resident} for baseball and than is offered another 20% for academics does that count as 70% against the 11.7 scholarships?

Thanks in advance

Easy way to look at it, using simple numbers:

Baseball has 11.7 scholarships (D-1). Say your son goes to a school that costs $10,000 a year and he gets a half baseball scholarship of $5,000. That amount is taken from the baseball program's total of $117,000 total scholarship budget, leaving the program with $112,000 remaining for other players. Then say your son gets $5,000 in academic scholarship money. These dollars have nothing to do with baseball, but the player is still going to school for free.

There is a minimum qualification for academic money that either does or does not count against the 11.7 ie.1300SAT old test and top 10% of the graduating class. Financial aid and academic money under the target # do count against the 11.7 for the freshman year only. Soph year and beyond these 2, financial aid and academic money do not count.

I am not positive but asked one coach. He stated that it does vary according to school but the student athlete has to qualify for a Presidential/Dean Award. To do this the player must have a minimum 3.5GPA, 1200SAT, and/or top 10% of the graduating class. He said you need at least 2 of 3. I do know for a fact that financial aid is included for the first year and that both drop off after year one.
