Slow roller to short. Bang bang play at first, except 1B drops ball. Definitely E3. Runner safe. But for some odd reason, runner thought he was out. Goes to 1B dugout. Just before he gets in dugout, coach sends him back toward 1B. 1B still has ball, tags him before reaching the bag. Called OUT.

How would this be scored (other than "knucklehead move by the batter-runner!")???

I would score it as follows:

SS gets an assist, runner reaches on E-3.

Runner then out, 3u (first baseman unassisted).

This is similar to what you would score if, for example, he had lined a one-hopper to RF for a clean single, but after rounding the bag the RF threw to first to get him out on his way back after his turn. In that instance you still award the base hit to show how he made it safely to first, then you score how the out was made. In your scenario, the E is how he reached first safely, so you still score that, then the out is made.

Your 1B might want the subsequent play to erase his E, but you'll have to disappoint him.
