There is a runner on first base.  Batter hits a hard hit line drive in which the shortstop dives to get the ball.  Batter & runner thinks he caught the ball and the batter runs to the dugout.  Home plate umpire rules the shortstop did not catch the ball & rules the batter out for leaving the field of play and going to the dugout.  What is scoring for the batter.  If the batter & runner would have continued to run and it would have been scored a hit.  How do you score the batter?  Is it a base hit and out or what?  Please email me at likes2box@aol.com

The 1st one is fairly simple. Score it the same way you’d score 2 or 3 below. Personally, I’d likely give the PO to the shortstop.

OBR 10.09(c) The official scorer shall credit automatic putouts as follows (and shall credit no

assists on these plays except as specified):

(2) When a runner is called out for being touched by a fair ball (including an Infield Fly), the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder nearest the ball;

(3) When a runner is called out for running out of line to avoid being tagged, the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder whom the runner avoided;

The 2nd question is really easy. The batter gets a hit if there were no putouts and no errors. If the lead runner is put out on a force, the batter reaches on a fielder’s choice.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this question, I am most appreciative for your input.

As for....

Mr. JCG (aka Mr. Baseball),

I am sorry if I disturbed Mr. Baseball trying to ask a question & I just wanted to see if there was someone who knew how this would be scored.  Mr. Baseball I am truly sorry, please go back to your recliner and continue your suds-sucking & hopefully our pats will never cross again.    FYI - you give Charlie Brown a bad name by using his image.

Dear RM,

I didn't know you were such a sensitive soul whose delicate feelings were so easily bruised.  Had I known, I would have been much more considerate.  Please accept my apologies, and know that our pats will never cross again.  I do hope you feel better very soon.

Sincerely,

Mr. Baseball.

Actually, this very nearly happened in the majors this weekend. Can't remember the game as I was channel surfing, but the hitter dropped one into rf and must have thought it was caught. He stopped short and headed toward the dugout as the 1b coach screamed at him to get his attention.
