I have a son who is a senior this year in high school in Southern California. He is playing on one of the scout ball team, and this is his 3rd year. As you know, playing in scout ball is a big time commitment. Typically, we drive up one to two hours each way, and play two 7-inning games on top of BP and fielding practices. All of these add up to 9-10 hours every Sunday in fall. The competition is good, but I was wondering if it is really worth spending this much time every week for the next 2 months.

He played in TOS and Area Code Games this summer and had already made a verbal commitment to a DI college program last year. So the only upside is the chance of being drafted.

Until now, I have not really seen many pro scouts at those games, other than the scouts on the playing teams. I see many college coaches, but that does not matter to my son anymore...

I hear that the participation may lead to being selected on the All-Star tournament at the end of the season, which can give good exposure to pro scouts. Is that the only upside? My son has secured a spot for WWBA tournament in Jupiter already...

My son wants to spend as much time as possible in the weight room during the off-season. So typically, he is not in the best condition to play baseball on Sundays this time of the year, which is another factor.

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

Welcome to the hsbaseballweb! Wink

Having gone through this, I really and truly think it is simply a personal decision. I will tell you that my younger son did it purely for the reps and competition...had nothing to do with the draft. Older son did things like this to see what would happen in the draft.

Seems to me you have the reasons, both ways. Do whats best for your son given your own family's values and priorities.

To me this is a no brainer. IMO he should be playing. Our youngest played 2 years of scout ball while also playing football. I did not have to push him, when his body felf ok he played with his scout team or just took BP.

Also, this is good expose to the Pro scout community. Him not be there says something about his work ethic and I am sure his college HC would want him to play also. So reconsider!
Welcome to the HSBBW. It is a very big commitment.

Some scout teams, depending on who is the scout are really good for instructional purposes. It probably will not lead to much concerning the draft, I am not sure that is the intent of scout teams, just really good baseball. If that is the purpose (draft) it may not be worth the time you have to spend. The other opportunities you speak of
may make more sense to play for the team (oportunities).

I believe that when players take opportunities and use that time to get better, work really hard not just expect things to happen because they are good (so is everyone else), things WILL happen.

My son played for an associate scout in HS and he learned a ton. Probably the best coach he ever played with.

Ironically, the team the coach was affiliated with was STL.
Wow! In a matter of 24 hours, I have gotten so many helpful advice coming from valuable experiences. This is amazing! I had been using a lot of information on this board over the past several years, but this was my first post. I appreciate you taking time to share your knowledge and experiences.

I was starting to have some concerns when my son's friends were not showing up at those games over the past two weekends... I was starting to worry if he was not using his time productively. My son never turns down opportunities to play baseball. During his sophomore year, he was getting one or two at bats at those scout ball games, but he still enjoyed those weekends.

As originally planned, he will keep playing those games and keep sharpening his skills, not worrying about peripheral stuff like exposure. It is a privilege to play in the scout ball with other talented and dedicated players, and he shall enjoy the game while he can.

floridafan, thank you for your advice on the weight training. I will make sure that his workouts will focus on those areas!
Caldave;

Will your son play in the Sept 14-16 Scout Tournament next weekend
at Azuza Pacific and other locations?

I plan to attend, Goodwill Series/Australia selects players and scouts to coach our teams from this Scout League for the annual December trip to Australia.

This will be our 18th journey to the land "down under" and 30th year in International Baseball.

What team does he play on?

"founder" of the Area Code Games.

Strange things happen in baseball and scout teams can be beneficial. Bum, Jr. was in the Mariners Cup as a junior in h.s. and was not drafted by them.. the first time around.

It's all about talent, tenacity and getting your name out there.
