In a recent seminar, Ron Polk of Mississippi State made a remark about Mississippi State's recruiting. HSBBW had a post about that seminar.
quote:
Coach Polk stated that if you have to send Mississippi State a letter or a video ... "that player is not one that we are looking to recruit." According to Coach Polk, MSU only recruits players that everyone already knows about.

Mark Fuller, pitching coach at Auburn, said they had never recruited off a video but a player could send a video to Auburn for viewing.

Hope this helps

Mobunts,
I thought about not posting that remark by coach Polk but it IS how he feels. I think ANYTHING to put the player on the radar screen is a plus. Not to disagree with Coach Polk but I would venture to say that in the past there have been players that have sent Coach Polk information, he’s forwarded that information to his baseball camp director, the baseball camp director sends an invitation to the player, the player comes to a camp, he looks good enough at the camp to garner a look the next summer, the recruiter is impressed at his summer game(s), and they ultimately make an offer. The original information sent by the player has long been discarded and forgotten but may have triggered the recruiting process. The recruiting cycle is a process where one single event can be regarded as insignificant but when you combine all these “insignificant” events into a recruiting plan …… “PRESTO”…….good things happen to the player.

Actually Fungo I think the post is a good one. It's probably another dose of reality in this process. I certainly don't have any problem with it. If that is how a school goes about their business,so be it. You can't argue with SUCCESS.
I would still be curious to know if other schools approach it the same way?

To reply to the video question:

I think that if you just send a video to a coach without his request or previous contact he will put it in a pile and throw it away with the rest. Actually the head coach will never even see it, an assistant coach will throw it away for him.

The video fits in after you have made contact with a coach. He will use that to guide his recruiting strategy. He may need to see it to decide if he needs to make a visit and see your son play. I will garuntee if you send a video to some coach that hasn't requested one it will end up in the trash.

Having played agaisnt Polk when he coached at Georgia and they were #1 in the nation, I would also agree not to mess with success. This is a reality that a lot of parents don't want to acknowledge. In most (but not all situations), if your son has not been noticed by highly successful national programs, it is not an accident.
