Can you say "East Coast Bias". The west coast teams get screwed every year when they pick teams. The reality is that if they took the top 64 teams for regionals and seeded them by quality (and not geography) you would have alot more west coast schools in the world series (like they used to!) That's because west coast teams would be shipped back east in regionals and beat up on those teams. The result was 3-4 teams from the west in Omaha. Now you see a Long Beach in the same pool as an ASU or a Stanford with a Fullerton. Let's go back to the way they used to do it and you will see where the best teams come from. If you think I'm wrong just look at how NCAA softball is done. Over half the teams at the WS are from the Pac-10 because they seed by quality and not geography.
calbb-
The inverse could also true on the East coast, so what exactly is your point? If you put east coast teams in western regionals, are you saying they would get beat every time? Florida schools have to beat each other to get to Omaha, as do most SEC/ACC teams. So its not like California schools are the only one with a raw deal.
The fact is, there is talent everywhere, and to say that west coast teams would go east and dominate easily is a load in my opinion.
Why even have a tournament if the west coasters will beat up on everyone anyway?
As I stated earlier, there is talent everywhere, thats why you play the games.
Talk about bias......

lolololol....And the national champion is from MICHIGAN.
I think Calbb and Son have an extremely valid point which I read to be that the CWS is not necessarily the best 8 teams and most often times it is not.
In my view, the responsibility for that lies with the NCAA, the selection procedures and committee and their efforts to be frugal with "travel." Instead of seeding 1-64 as they do in basketball, baseball is seeded geographically to a large extent and regionals set accordingly. When you do this, the US geography impacts because there are more schools and less travel in the East and more open spaces/less schools in the West.
You see this even better at DIII. To save money, the NCAA does not care about a national champion being the best team. In TX this week, the football teams ranked #3 and 8 in the nation(#1 and #2 in their region) are playing a first round playoff game...against each other, while the 6 and 8 seeds are playing. Whatever happened to 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7. Money is what happened.
Two years ago, the DIII baseball west regional had the #3, 8, 14 and 20 ranked teams while 2 other regionals had no nationally ranked clubs.
In Division I, the NCAA is not so blatant and cavalier and disguises the money issue better. With the revenue they now are getting from the CWS, it seems that DI baseball should have a true national champion based on teams being ranked 1-64 and seeded/competing accordingly. Not likely to occur soon, if ever so debates like this will continue to rage on message boards.

bbscout, why do I think you have that answer handy?
Infielddad,
Good post. The best (teams, programs) don't always get to Omaha. However, just like the benchmark for the best team in MLB is the winner of the WS, the CWS is for NCAA Div1 baseball.
