8-0 WB IN 5th. 6 errors by infield and 3-4 passed balls by catcher

11-0 in 4th WB over GB

16-0. Top 5 WB. 8 errors by infield of GB.

WB beats GB 16-2.

16-2 final WB over GB.

14-1 GF over DC

NR 5-1 over Oscar Smith.  NR bats starting to warm up a bit.  A solid performance by both teams.  NR used five arms with Matt Holt getting the win.

Who pitched for Oscar Smith?

Morgan, a lefty, started and went for about 4 innings.

How was Matt's velo?

Not sure in regards to yesterday.  So far this spring (if that's what you want to call it) I would say that he has been pitching around 84-86, topping at 87/88.  The eye test says that yesterday was more or less the same.  As it warms, it wouldn't shock me to see him consistently in the upper 80s.

Hickory 12-0 over Indian River. S. Polansky 3-run homer off 1st year IR pitcher Spainhour was crushing blow to IR hopes of upset. 4 more in 2nd inning allowed Hawks to cruise. IR managed only 2 hits.

GF 2 OS 1

Mike Lasko walk off single in the bottom of the 7th. Brett Smith started for Grassfield and went 6. Stallings threw a clean top of 7 to pick up the win. Packert went all 7 for OS. Threw well.

Kings Fork scores two runs in the top of the seventh to beat NR 2-1.  A few key themes seem pretty consistent thus far:

 

1) NR has lost three games. In all three, the opposition scored the winning run(s) in the 7th inning or later.  To piggyback on that theme, NR has consistently squandered scoring opportunities that would have given them much more compelling early leads and changed the composition of each of those games.

 

2) NR pitching has given up a combined 11 runs in five games.  Thus far, no team has scored more than 3 runs against NR, yet NR is 2-3 on the season.

 

3) Finally, and stating the obvious...NR hasn't shown the ability to score runs.

WB beats IR 6-5 in 8 innings.

Great Bridge over Deep Creek 9-2. Shaky infield play continues for Great Bridge. A lot better than game against WB tho.

Hickory over Lakeland 10-0

Sounds like a very good game.  OS has made some strides to be competitive with the right matchups.

Did I hear correctly that Fuqua threw 140ish pitches?!?

 

I've now heard it from several people.

I didn't keep track but I'll say this....I was talking to a few others as the game progressed about how his pitch count HAD to be pretty high.  He threw 7 of the 8 innings and had quite a few innings that were long.  He got out of trouble a few times where WB had runners on and going deep in counts.   I don't want to guess, but he threw more than I would have had him.   He looked good throughout, but you already know my stance on pitch counts and arm usage.   So....I've said enough. 

Still early but if the traditionally strong SED schools are any indication then the SED might be deeper than ever this year.  GF looks to have taken the step forward to real contender and IR, OS and KF are closing the gap.  

 

In past years NR might be in real trouble now but they will settle be a tough out by May.  After spring break we'll see what everyone has and find out if the SED is as strong as last season. 

WB beat Lakeland 14-0.

GF 8 GB 6

Stallings went 6 giving up 6 getting the win. Perdue picks up the save. Dwight Riddick with a 2 RBI single in the top of 7. Brian Johnson for GF and Colby Higgerson for GB each with HRs.

Good game at great bridge. To follow up on triple play wheeler had a no hitter going into 5th. Walks and clutch hits with 2 outs had grass field tie it. Well played by both teams.

Will the real Nansemond River please stand up?

NR over Hickory 6-3.

 

Hickory came out swinging and took control early, scoring three runs in the first two innings.  Eason breezed thru the first few until running into trouble in the 4th.  Sophomore Jarrett Henderson hit his first career HR, a two-run shot to cut the lead 3-2.  A few batters later, Matt Holt did the same, hitting another 2-run HR to center field to give NR a 4-3 lead.  NR would add a couple more insurance runs.  Michael Blanchard got the start and the win for NR, going five innings.  Matt Holt picked up the save.  There were several great defensive plays made throughout the game.
