GBS12, exceptional post. We'ver throw 6 varsity pitchers, one JV pitcher and 2 kids that haven't pitched this year (but do practice) in games due to playing so many games in a row. We still are on a very strict pitch count (85) and so, we use 2 pitchers a lot. Heck, for the kids that are position players, they are on a 50 pitch count. WE incurred a couple of losses that way and were embarassed once but I refuse to hurt these kids for a win. At the seed meetings, no one cares. BTW, head to head really matters a lot to me. Beating common opponents is skewed at best. For example, one of our major conferences has a team that hasn't won a game. NOT EVEN CLOSE! So, that team pitcher a #4 against them. Then, when they played an out of conference great team which had two tough conference games, they threw their #2 verses that team's #5. They walked into the seed meeting bragging about the win. It does matter how deep you are into your pen. BTW, we will again have to go 6 deep this week as we play 2 conference games, a team that is 19-3 and a tournament. We hope that this type of schedule will help us in the end. JMHO!
CoachB, Thanks. I do believe that playing tough games does help and hope that all non-conference games Glenbrook South has played against good teams will help when the post-season starts, but of course I still wish the seeds had worked out more in our favor, but nothing can be done about that now. Anyway good luck in your games this week.
CoachB,

I will always regret that my son never got to play for you, or a coach like you during his HS tenure. You don't even know how your priorities differ from the norm today, or maybe you do know. I watch 130 pitch counts routinely and just shake my head. If all goes well, my son should be back on the mound this summer. I've got a pitch count given us by Dr. Andrews and that will be the absolute rule. Guess what, his count is also 85, at least for a while. It will take lawsuits filed against coaches and schools when boys blow their elbows out due to excessive pitch counts (It's already happening according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper) for things to change. Until then, it is like the wild west, anything goes.

I know this is off topic but when I read posts by CoachB discussing pitch counts and protecting his players, it deserves mention.

Absolutely it deserves mention. I'm glad to say that I do not know of any high school coaches that pitch their pitchers to death. We've had a kid get up low 100's a couple times, but it is very seldom. Heck, most of our games recently haven't lasted that long.

CoachB is an excellent coach and I can't wait for another quality MVC game Friday when the Bulldogs of Waterloo travel to Troy to take on the Knights of TRIAD.
itsrosy, there is a kid from my rival school (who is the teams ace) who threw 140 pitches on a tuesday game. (only 6 innings pitched) and the coach wouldnt take him out. then he came back on saturday and threw over 100 again. The scary thing is, this kid actually has a scholarship to play division 1 baseball next year. and really the only thing the coach cares about is winning, even at the expense of his players.
The coaches are the best people to seed but Like CoachB said - sometimes the Seeds come out crazy for all of the reasons he gave. When we first became a AA team and were still in a Class A Conference, we got some wild seeds. One year, we won 23 games and one team seeded us first in our regional when there were 2 Southwestern Conference schools cleary better than us....they had beaten us also. Then the next year with 20 some wins, the same coach seeded us dead last, when we had beaten everyone in the Regional during the season.

Whatever, don't put it in the hands of the mdia - the St Louis Post had the final season standings for us in basketball this year - we were under both CM and Mascoutah and we had beaten them both at the end of the season - Mascoutah twice. I guess whoever made that poll hadnt read the papers. Our record were all 3 the same.
I would like to see a change in the system of how teams are paired for the tourney. I think the system of seeding will have to stay the same, sure some mistakes are made but the coaches still are going to have a better grasp then any other group. What I think should happen is that their should be no regional host sites. The higher seeded teams would be the home team until the sectional and the matchups would go as they should 1 vs 16 2 vs 15 etc. I'm sure it will never happen but I think its a good idea.
